Research Manager, Industrial Energy and Hydrogen

We are now looking for a visionary Research Manager to create impact through science-based innovations together with VTT’s experts and stakeholders. You will lead the research portfolio at the Industrial Energy and Hydrogen research area according to VTT’s strategy to reach the common goals. You are a thought leader who inspires and mentors scientists and influences continuous development and strives for growth.

We are seeking a person with a wide view of public research environment and who proactively guides high impact research towards customer needs. With your coaching and collaborative approach, you will lead and ensure scientific work generating high impact peer-reviewed publications and coordinate research area’s activities in international research networks (e.g. participation in stakeholder events, expert duties in scientific committees, proposal preparation work).  You are a member of research area’s leadership team and you will report directly to the Vice President of the research area. The location of the position is Espoo, Tampere or Jyväskylä.

The ‘Industrial Energy and Hydrogen’ research area activities are highly driven by the urgent need to mitigate CO2 emissions in hard to decarbonize sectors, especially in process industry. The research area is new at VTT with approximately 80 people. It focuses on discovering novel solutions related to clean hydrogen, renewable energy concepts and flexibility of energy operations in industry. We are driven by solving global challenges as well as finding growth opportunities for our customers and society.

With us you will be responsible for

  • Generating and managing of high impact research portfolios of ‘Industrial Energy and Hydrogen’ research area and other focus areas
  • Building roadmaps and managing and coordinating self- and jointly funded opportunities and project preparations
  • Actively influencing the science policy through your networks e.g. relevant funding organizations ministries and European Commission
  • Creating and nurturing national and international collaboration networks with significant impact
  • Having an active role in academic collaborations as well as participating in development of strategic customer partnerships from research perspective

Who we are looking for

To succeed in the position, you have relevant background in energy production and/or process industry and you understand the application areas for the research area ‘Industrial Energy and Hydrogen’. You are experienced in research management as well as in management of national and international projects together with academic and industrial partners. You have gained your experience on for example research team leader, assistant professor, grant managing or other relevant roles. If your background is from research, you have ideally 2+ years of post doc level research with responsibilities in demanding projects and successful track record of European research project funding acquisition.

In addition, you have:

  • University degree at PhD level in relevant area (e.g. Engineering or Environmental Science)
  • Proven track record of raising external research funding
  • Knowledge and experience from national and international innovation systems and public funding as well as interactive approach with financiers
  • Strong publication portfolio is an asset
  • International academic and societal networks
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
