Research Technician, Metallurgy and Inorganic Chemistry

Do you want to join our team, which aims to solve material challenges in extreme environments?

Our team’s main activities are related to understanding materials behaviour in extreme conditions. These conditions include high pressure and temperature, harsh chemical conditions, regions with microbial activity, and various other service environments. In these domains, the laboratory work is far from normal and requires motivated and self-driven talents.

Please get to know about VTT's research infra from here.

We are now looking for a Researcher Technician to join our Materials in extreme environments team.

In our team you will be working in close collaboration with researchers and scientist from many different domains in material research and testing. You will have a full support from the current senior laboratory staff and we expect that you have a can-do attitude and you are eager to develop your skills.

With us you will be responsible for

The work combines metallography, corrosion experiments and concrete material development in research projects. In metallography, the work tasks are mainly optical and stereo microscopy, sample preparation, etching and hardness measurements. Within corrosion experiments, you will be doing sample preparation and documentation, preparation of solutions, planning and execution of experiments, field examinations and data handling. In addition, your work tasks include general chemical laboratory work on mineral materials (cements, binders, nanoparticles, aggregates), concrete mix preparation, mixing, concrete specimen manufacturing, and storage of specimens as well upkeep and maintenance work of equipment in the laboratory.

We expect you to have

We hope that you have good working knowledge on chemicals and basic knowledge of binder chemistry and concrete materials. In order to be successful in this position, we expect you to have good laboratory skills for chemical measurements (eg. pH, titration) and experience of instrumental analysis (e.g. optical microscopy, calorimeter, XRF). You should be able to work in environments with exposures to Ni, Cr, epoxy, cement, fine powders and dust.

Experience of basic concrete quality measurements (slump, air content, strength tests, density, etc.) is an advantage.

The work requires good written and spoken Finnish and English, as well as the capabilities to work as a part of an international research team.

As a person you are

  • proactive
  • precise and well-organized
