Assistant/Associate Professor or Professor in Telecommunications Engineering (especially Software Defined Everything)

The Faculty of Information Technology is seeking to recruit a Professor or Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) in Telecommunications Engineering (especially Software Defined Everything) starting April, 1, 2026, or as soon as possible after that. The Professor position is valid until further notice.  The position of an Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an Associate Professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model at the university of Jyväskylä). After each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the qualifications for promotion to the next level (Associate/Professor). The tenure track aims to progress to a permanent professorship.

Who we are looking for

The person selected for this position will lead research and teaching in the field of telecommunications engineering, with a focus on the broad concept of Software Defined Everything, including topics such as Software Defined Radio and Software Defined Network, for instance. You will work in close collaboration with other researchers and research groups, promoting scientific and technological advancement in the field. The position requires expertise in telecommunications, software technologies, virtualization, and hardware interface architectures. The position is located in the faculty’s software engineering unit. 

In addition to research, the position of Assistant/Associate Professor includes teaching and doctoral training. The Assistant/Associate Professor supervises undergraduate students, Doctoral Researchers, and Postdoctoral Researchers according to their career path. The Assistant/Associate Professor is also involved in the continuous development of teaching and other development and administrative tasks. The Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to contribute to research projects in their field and to acquire funding for the research team.      

The Assistant/Associate Professor is required to have an applicable doctoral degree, an excellent record of international scientific research and publications, international networking, teaching and, in particular at the Associate level, funding and thesis supervision. This will be assessed based on the level of the tenure track career model applied for. In addition to research, the Professor's duties include teaching and doctoral training. The Professor supervises undergraduate students, Doctoral Researchers, and Postdoctoral Researchers. Responsibilities also include the continuous development of teaching and participation in other development and administrative activities. The recruited person is expected to contribute to the responsibility for research projects in their field and for the research team's funding. They are also expected to participate in societal interactions in their area of expertise.       

The Professor is required to have an applicable doctoral degree, a high level of scientific excellence and publication record, extensive experience in teaching, supervising Doctoral Researchers and Postdoctoral Researchers, managing research activities, and a strong track record of national and international cooperation in their field of research and in obtaining research funding.

The duties and qualification requirements of an Assistant/Associate Professor and Professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching. The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call. A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of employment.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. The starting gross salary is approx. 4500—4900 EUR/month at the Assistant level, approx. 5200–5600 EUR/month at the Associate level, and approx. 6300-6800 EUR/month at Professor level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
