Assistant/Associate Professor, Tenure Track, in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to recruit an Assistant/Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Mathematics starting on August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible after that. According to the tenure track model at the University of Jyväskylä, the position of an assistant professor is filled for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an associate professor for a fixed term of five years. At the end of each fixed-term assignment, an evaluation is conducted to assess the employee’s qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate professor / full professor).

The tasks involve conducting high-level mathematical research and teaching mathematics. The career stage of the person to be recruited will determine the level of responsibility and requirements for other tasks.

We are looking for applicants with a proven track record in high-level mathematical research. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research profile aligns with the research being conducted at the department.

The duties and qualification requirements of an Assistant/Associate Professor are stipulated in the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Candidates are expected to have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching. After signing the employment contract, a personal career plan is prepared for you. The career plan specifies the objectives, intermediate milestones and evaluation criteria of the tenure track period. Your personal career plan helps you clarify your goals, and you will receive regular feedback on your work in the initial and follow-up discussions. Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. The starting gross salary will be between 4200—4800 EUR/month at the assistant level and between 4800–5500 EUR/month at the associate level depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a research and education unit comprising two disciplines. The department ranks among the international elite in its field and performs exceptionally well in global comparisons such as the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, placing at the very top in Finland in mathematics. The main research areas in mathematics are mathematical analysis and geometry, including, among others, stochastics and the mathematics of inverse problems. The research groups in mathematical analysis and geometry study geometric analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations, as well as the geometry of metric groups. In stochastics, the central research focus is stochastic analysis. The research topics of the inverse problems group include inverse problems related to partial differential equations and geometry, with applications in medical and industrial imaging methods. In statistics, the research areas include computational statistics, causal models, the design of studies, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, as well as biometry and environmental statistics. The department hosts a research group of the Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures (2022–2029), designated by the Academy of Finland. The department is also part of the Flagship consortium in Mathematical Modelling, Observation, and Imaging (FAME).
