Assistant or Associate Professor in Statistics
The department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to recruit an Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Statistics starting 1st August 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of an assistant professor is for a fixed term of three or five years, and the position of an associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model at the university of Jyväskylä). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate/full professor).
Who we are looking for
You do high-quality research. Your field of research can be any area of statistics, including statistical machine learning. An interest in collaboration with industry and research institutions is considered an advantage. You possess expertise and enthusiasm for teaching statistics at all levels, from basic education to doctoral studies.
The responsibilities of an Assistant or Associate Professor include active research, applying for research funding, teaching statistics, and participating in the planning of teaching. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral education in statistics.
The duties and qualification requirements of an Assistant/Associate Professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

Your personal career plan helps you clarify your goals, and you will receive regular feedback on your work in the initial and follow-up discussions. We will also support your progress through mentoring, training and other support activities needed. Career path progression is based on an overall assessment of a person's progress.
Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. The starting gross salary will be between 4100—4800 EUR/month at the assistant level and between 4700–5500 EUR/month at the associate level depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

- A numbered list of all scientific publications and other publications showing the applicant's ability and merits for the position using the guidelines of the Research Council of Finland. Differing from the Research Council guidelines, other statistics manuscripts from, for example the Arxiv archive, can be used in the publication list if they are publicly available and a link is provided.
- A maximum of five publications, which must be numbered according to the list of publications (as one PDF file) or a PDF file with public links to the 5 chosen publications.
- Research plan: a short written description (max 4 pages) of the applicant's research merits, leadership in research, and experience in obtaining research funding, as well as a research plan related to the position and a vision of how the applicant's current and future work will support the research and international collaboration at the University of Jyväskylä.
- A teaching portfolio prepared according to the guidelines, i.e., a written description of pedagogical training and teaching merits (Instructions on the JYU Work with us website).
- Evidence of societal interaction (max 2 pages).

Department of Mathematics and Statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis and geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry, the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications e.g., in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics the areas of research are computational statistics, causal models, design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry, and environmental statistics. The department is a member of the networks of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems and of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures.
