Data Management Lead, Microelectronics and Quantum Technology

We are now looking for an experienced Data Management Lead to join our Operational Excellence team at VTTs Microelectronics and Quantum technology research area!
Microelectronics and Quantum technology research area focuses on developing new microelectronics materials, devices and integration methods to power future digital systems and technologies to scale up quantum computers and systems. We work globally with our clients and research partners to solve global challenges through impactful research. Our excellence has been delivered by more than 240 researchers.

In this highly exciting role, you will architect and coordinate the implementation of intelligent, scalable data systems that empower our researchers from the earliest stages of concept development through design, fabrication, and service delivery. At the heart of your mission will be the creation of a future-ready IT infrastructure for a multi-user microelectronics cleanroom - an environment where precision, collaboration, and innovation, and strict requirements for security and confidentiality converge.
You’ll be based in Espoo Otaniemi, working within the Operational Excellence team of VTT’s Microelectronics and Quantum technology research area. In addition to the research area, you’ll collaborate closely with VTT’s enterprise IT architects and experts to ensure seamless alignment with our broader digital strategy, while also engaging with external partners and vendors to bring world-class solutions to life.
This role offers the chance to shape the future of data engineering at VTT. You’ll contribute to the planning of our next-generation Manufacturing Execution System (MES), helping to bridge fabrication measurement data with operational systems in a way that is both scalable and deeply integrated. You may also have an opportunity to build and lead a dedicated data engineering team.
You will be responsible for:
- Design data management model tailored to microelectronics and quantum technology R&D, fabrication and piloting
- Lead the implementation of data management process which enables collection of data that supports required documentation practices for consistency, traceability, and interoperability within the research area
- Collaborate with various stakeholders all the way from management and service providers to researchers, process engineers, and scientists to understand experimental data flows and optimize data collection, structuring, and accessibility workflows
- Develop data collection and storage solutions for in-line data collection, real-time analytics, and integration with laboratory instrumentation and semiconductor process tools
- Integrate in-line data collection and analytics with end-of-line data, enabling comprehensive visibility across the full process chain, from real-time measurements to final outcomes
- Plan and support data warehousing strategies to ensure scalable, secure, and efficient storage and access to research and operational data
- Work in close partnership with VTT’s central IT organization to ensure technical alignment, security, and scalability
- Contribute to MES planning and integration efforts related to VTT’s cleanrooms
- Contribute to overall system architecture planning with third-party vendors and technology partners
Who we are looking for:
- Expertise in data modeling, architecture, ontology and cloud platforms
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, laboratory automation, and semiconductor process data
- Experience with cleanroom data management and operational tools, (e.g. MES)
- Understanding of cleanroom tool interfaces such as SECS/GEM and equipment communication protocols
- Programming skills in Python and SQL; experience with scientific computing libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy)
- Experience with statistical analysis tools such as JMP and Minitab is considered a plus
- Strong communication skills in English and Finnish, with the ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences
