Sanoma Media Finland is the leading Finnish cross-media company and a forerunner in the digital transformation of media. Our Tech & Data organisation is operating at the very heart of the fast-paced media world. We have 150+ experts of IT and data based in different cities in Finland.

We develop and support content creation tools for 750 journalists working for Sanoma Media Finland newspapers (e.g. Helsingin Sanomat, Ilta-Sanomat) and magazines (e.g. MeNaiset, Gloria, ET-lehti). We work with editorial rooms, digital service development teams and other business units.

Helsingin Sanomat and Ilta-Sanomat have a joint AI team, HS-IS Lab. It focuses on utilizing generative AI in newsrooms. The Lab’s goal is to test, develop, and implement generative AI tools and combine both journalistic and technological expertise. The lab is part of Newsroom transformation team, which develops and integrates various tools and processes and ensure reliable production environment for round-the-clock news production.

About the role

In this role, you will

• Write high quality, maintainable code and release it as well working features
• Perform peer reviews and participate in technical discussions both at the team level and product level
• Participate in internal and/or external developer communities
• Contribute to technical planning, backlog management and seasonal planning
• Help investigate and resolve production issues
• Participate in security and business continuity
• Mentor and empower other people around you

About you

In our belief, we find the following characteristics important to succeed in the job.

• Experience: 2+ years of software development experience. This position is a good place to grow as a cloud native AI developer.
• Software development. Programming languages are only tools, but you have most experience with JavaScript/TypeScript or Python. On databases, you understand the characteristics of relational, vector and key-value databases, and have used MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB or others.
• Cloud development. You can work yourself through in the cloud infrastructure. We are using AWS with CDK/CloudFormation, but your experience can be also from GCP or Azure.
• Generative AI. You have hands-on experience with GenAI components, such as fine-tuning, vector databases, and advanced LLM prompt engineering. You understand today’s LLM application architecture, its building blocks and can create LLM applications from scratch.
• Technical leadership: As a development team member, you have enjoyed the opportunities to support others and make technical and architectural decisions.
• Willingness to learn: As new, interesting, and better technologies evolve, you have the willingness and demonstrated capability to learn new things quickly and share your learnings with others.
• Language: We require excellent Finnish language skills (C1 level) to effectively communicate with internal teams and to fully understand our products, which are in Finnish.
