Assistant/Associate Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage (tenure track)

The University of Turku, Faculty of Humanities, invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Digital Cultural Heritage. The employment  will begin by agreement during 2026.

This position is part of the Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age (DigiHeri) profiling area (PROFI 8), which aims to develop a multidisciplinary research community.  DigiHeri explores the effects of digitalization from the perspective of cultural heritage. The person selected for the positon will play a central role in the development of this profiling area. More information about the profiling area is available at: https://sites.utu.fi/digiheri/

The position is located at the School of History, Culture, and Arts Studies at the University of Turku, within the degree programme in Digital Culture, Landscape, and Cultural Heritage, which is based in Pori.

Job Description

An Assistant or Associate Professor is expected to conduct and supervise scientific work, provide research-based teaching, follow developments in their field, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation.  

The field of the position is research in digital cultural heritage, with a particular focus on issues related to digitized and/or digitally created cultural heritage materials, including their  identification, use, enrichment, and critical analysis.

Cultural heritage comprises tangible, intangible, or digital remnants inherited from past generations and preserved for the future. 

The duties of the Assistant or Associate Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage include:

  • Actively initiating research projects and developing research collaborations
  • Conducting research and teaching in the field of cultural heritage studies, as well as in digital history and culture
  • Teaching at the master's level and doctoral levels at the School of History, Culture, and Arts Studies and within the JUNO doctoral programme
  • Participating in the development of teaching and research of the degree programme and the School, as well as in the development of the DigiHeri profiling area.
  • Pursuing professional development in accordance with a career plan drawn up at the beginning of the employment.

We require:

According to the regulations of the University of Turku (Section 29), applicants are required to have:

  • A suitable higher education degree
  • The ability to conduct independent scientific research and experience in leading scientific work
  • Experience in international collaboration
  • The ability to provide high-quality, research-based teaching
  • The ability to supervise theses.

In addition, we require:

  • Profound knowledge of history, cultural studies, or art research
  • Experience in researching large digital cultural heritage datasets
  • Experience in analyzing broad historical questions using digital materials
  • Expertise in the handling and sustainable management of digital cultural heritage materials, as well as the ability to work in multidisciplinary environments. 

In assessing applicant's merits, the following will be considered: 

  • Research merits
  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • Familiarity with international digital cultural heritage research and participation in research networks
  • Views on the development of the field at the University of Turku
  • Activity in acquiring external research funding.

Language skills

Successful performance in the position requires proficiency in Finnish and good proficiency in English. However, an applicant with good English skills but without Finnish language skills at the time of application  may be recruited. In such a case, the selected candidate is required to acquire sufficient Finnish language skills for the performance of their duties within three years. The University offers support for language studies.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is 7. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid. Salary, based on previous experience and skills, is approximately 5000  5800 euros/month at the beginning of the assignment.

The position has a trial period of six months.
