Doctoral Researcher in High-precision mass spectrometry

 

The Department of Physics is seeking to recruit a Doctoral Researcher in high-precision mass spectrometry starting in January 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of 3,5 years. The position is fixed-term, as it is expected to lead to the completion of the doctoral thesis. 

The doctoral researcher will work within the Research Council of Finland funded project “Nuclei – the Structure and Origin of Matter” and perform high-precision atomic mass and Q-value measurements with the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap mass spectrometer at the IGISOL facility. The measurements will probe fundamental interactions and symmetries in nuclei and provide precision data for neutrino-physics studies via high-precision Q-value measurements. Furthermore, the doctoral researcher will have opportunities to participate in other mass measurements and experiments at the IGISOL facility.

The doctoral researcher will work in an international environment at the IGISOL facility, within the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The facility is used to conduct research at the intersection of fundamental symmetries, nuclear and atomic physics using techniques in laser spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and ion trapping. The position offers extensive hands-on training in ion trapping and data analysis in the environment of a large-scale experimental facility. The selected candidate’s work will cover, e.g.:

  • High-precision atomic mass and Q-value measurements at JYFLTRAP Penning trap
  • Data analysis and interpretation of the results
  • Presentation of scientific results at international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Development and upgrades related to the JYFLTRAP Penning trap
  • Participation in experiments at the IGISOL radioactive-ion-beam facility.

Who should apply

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in physics or a related field.  Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered advantageous, but not required:

  • Experimental atomic, nuclear or particle physics
  • Ion trapping and charged-particle manipulation
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Vacuum technology and/or instrumentation
  • Electronics, data acquisition and/or scientific programming (e.g. Python)
  • Simulations (e.g. SimIon or Comsol) and/or data analysis.

The tasks of a Doctoral Researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these. The duties, qualification requirements, and the language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines (Doctoral Students). A good command of English is required. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

In addition, the Doctoral Researcher must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. After selection, the selected person must apply for postgraduate study rights through a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. The salary for a Doctoral Researcher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 2–4 for teaching and research staff. The starting salary will be approximately 2500 €/month (gross income). A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. With progress of thesis work, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Education Employers. If you are relocating from abroad, we will support your move to Jyväskylä and Finland.

Department of Physics

The primary areas of research at the Department of Physics are materials physics, nuclear physics and particle physics. In materials physics, the core research fields are the physics of nanomaterials and thin films, quantum matter and quantum technologies, light-matter interaction and physics and chemistry of nanoparticles. Nuclear physics concentrates on nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure and applied accelerator-based research, and particle physics on the physics of the strong interaction and ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, particle cosmology and neutrino physics.
