Doctoral Researcher in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is seeking to recruit a Doctoral Researcher in Synthetic Organic Chemistry starting March 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of three years. The position is fixed-term, as it is expected to lead to the completion of the doctoral thesis.

We are looking for a candidate to join us in the research project EXATH (Electrocatalytic X-atom and Hydride Transfer), funded by the Research Council Finland. EXATH is led by Professor Petri Pihko. The Doctoral Researcher will work in the field of synthetic electrochemistry and molecular design. The work builds on our previous publications: (1) Advanced Energy Materials 2024 (DOI: 10.1002/aenm.202401635) and Angewandte Chemie International Edition 2016, 55, 669 (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201509302). The research integrates electrochemistry, molecular design, and development of synthetic methods. The doctoral thesis will focus on synthetic chemistry and novel electrocatalysts. A strong background in synthetic organic chemistry is expected; training in catalyst design and electrochemical methods will be provided as needed. The position may also include a 2-3 month research visit to the laboratory of our collaborator, Prof. Kevin Lam (University of Greenwich, UK) in late 2026 or early 2027.

Who we are looking for

The successful candidate is expected to have documented research experience in synthetic organic chemistry. In addition, we expect the candidate to plan, execute, document and communicate the research in a multidisciplinary research environment. Prior experience in enantioselective catalysis, synthetic electrochemistry or photochemistry, natural product synthesis and/or molecular design is considered an asset. In addition, experience in computational chemistry will also be a bonus, but the main focus of the work is in experimental research in synthetic organic chemistry.

The tasks of a Doctoral Researcher focus on research aiming at the completion of a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other related tasks to these. The duties, qualification requirements, and the language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines (Doctoral Students). A good command of English is required. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The eligible candidate has, or is about to obtain, a suitable Master's degree. In addition, the Doctoral Researcher must obtain the permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. After selection, the selected person must apply for postgraduate study rights through a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences.
