Senior researcher/Project specialist at Medical Bioinformatics Centre core facility, single-cell data analysis in Finland
The Medical Bioinformatics Centre (MBC) of University of Turku has an open position for a Senior researcher/Project specialist, starting on August 11, 2025, or as agreed. The position is for a fixed term until the end of the year 2027, but it is possible that it is extended.
MBC is part of the national Biocenter Finland research infrastructure and the European-wide ELIXIR infrastructure. We conduct internationally high-level research in the fields of bioinformatics and computational medicine. We develop and apply computational data analysis tools for interpreting large molecular and clinical datasets in medical research, in close collaboration with leading medical research groups and biobanks. As a core facility of Turku Bioscience Centre, we also support high-quality research by providing bioinformatics support to academic research units and healthcare organizations, among others, and scientific IT support to researchers.

Job description
The MBC core facility offers support for analyzing data generated by modern biotechnologies. We are looking for an expert in data analytics and bioinformatics to join our team and take responsibility of the development of data analysis service packages related to single-cell omics technologies. The position is part of the national Biocenter Finland infrastructure, aiming to enhance efficient utilization of the single-cell technologies in life science research across Finland. Key tasks include providing expert support, conducting data analyses, and developing support operations in collaboration with the centre's staff and stakeholders. Additionally, the position involves coordination and communication with collaborators and networks, preparation of funding applications, reporting, and participation in the organization of training events.
Who we are looking for
Applicants are required to have a broad understanding and experience with bioinformatics tools and the analysis of various omics data, especially single-cell omics data. Additionally, strong programming skills (e.g., R, Python), familiarity with bioinformatics libraries (e.g. Bioconductor), and the ability to work with version control tools (e.g., Git) are essential, as well as familiarity with best practices for data management and storing high-throughput data. The position requires initiative in problem-solving, self-direction, and excellent collaboration and communication skills. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is necessary. The applicant must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field. We may also consider applicants who hold a master´s degree in a relevant field. In that case, the job title is project researcher or project specialist.
- Experience in bioinformatics support services
- Familiarity with workflow management tools (e.g. Nextflow) and containerization techniques (e.g. Docker)
- Experience in working with HPC environments, job schedulers (e.g. SLURM), and cloud computing platforms
- Research experience in the field of biomedicine

Salary and trial period
The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities, aligning with the research personnel category or other personnel category. The job title depends on the education and skills of the person selected for the position. The salary consists of demand component and component based on personal performance. The average monthly salary, depending on previous experience and skills, is around 3500 – 4400 euros per month for a senior reseacher with a PhD degree and 2500 – 3300 euros per month for a project researcher with a Master’s degree at the beginning of the employment. The monthly salary of project specialist, belonging to the other expert personnel group, is 3500 – 3800 euros/month.
