The Micronova semiconductor fab located in Otaniemi is the focal point for microelectronics ecosystem in Finland. Its capabilities support research, development and small-volume production for VTT, Aalto University and external user companies. The total area of the cleanroom is 2 600 m², and there is an installed equipment base of 200 processing and measurement tools, enabling fabrication of devices for integrated photonics, RF, MEMS, superconducting and novel materials and memory devise development. The current wafer size is 200 mm.
VTT is currently expanding its activities through a large investment program, including new cleanroom space and significant equipment investments. This requires transformation of fab operational practices, business models and partnerships. VTT participates in several European pilot lines with the goal of providing pilot fabrication services in collaboration with other European RTOs and companies.
We are looking for a Fab Director to the Microelectronics and Quantum Technology research area
As Fab Director, you will lead VTT’s semiconductor fab organization and be responsible for its operations, business and their transformation. Your mission is to ensure that the fab becomes a world-class R&D and pilot fabrication environment, enabling innovation, industrialization and supporting VTT’s growth ambitions. You will be in a pivotal role in the Finnish microelectronics ecosystem, supporting its growth.
You will be responsible for:
- Strategic Development: Execute the long-term roadmap for fab capabilities, including technology upgrades, capacity planning, in alignment with VTT’s research and business objectives.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee all aspects of fab operations and business, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance with industry standards. Set clear priorities in line with the VTT’s goals.
- Transformation: Plan and execute transformation of fab operations and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and yield.
- Leadership & People Development: Lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team of 40+ professionals across maintenance, process engineering, fabrication, and quality. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance.
- Financial Stewardship: Own the fab’s financial planning, budgeting, and reporting. Ensure cost efficiency while securing funding for strategic investments and equipment upgrades.
- Customer & Ecosystem Engagement: Act as the primary executive interface for key customers and ecosystem partners. Build strong relationships to support joint development projects and expand fab utilization.
- Innovation Enablement: Champion the integration of new technologies and processes to secure VTT’s leadership in advanced microelectronics and quantum technologies.
- Safety and security: Be in charge of the overall safety and security guidelines of the cleanroom and its implementation.
Who we are looking for:
- A M.Sc,. or a Ph.D. in semiconductor technology or other relevant field.
- Proven experience (8+ years) in senior leadership roles within semiconductor fabrication, with a strong track record in operational and strategic management.
- Deep understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes and quality systems.
- Experience in driving technology transitions and managing complex infrastructure projects.
- Strong business acumen, including cost management and investment planning.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with fluency in English and the ability to engage with international stakeholders.
