Professor or Assistant / Associate (tenure track) Professor in Plant Ecology

The Faculty of Science is looking for a full professor or assistant/associate professor (tenure track) in Plant Ecology. The aim of the professorship is to strengthen scientific research and education in the field and the societal impact of research at the University of Turku. The position is located at the Department of Biology.

Plants and macroalgae play a fundamental role as primary producers, forming both the structural space in which other organisms live and the foundation of food webs in terrestrial and coastal ecosystems. Understanding how environmental conditions affect plant species and communities at different scales is therefore key to modelling ecosystem function. This is especially important when assessing long-term trends and future resilience of ecosystems in the face of changing land uses and climate. Important applied topics related to the ecology of plants and macroalgae include, among other things, ecosystem health, carbon sequestration, sustainability of agriculture and forestry, conservation biology, and habitat restoration. The Department of Biology has a strong profile in the fields of ecology and evolution, especially in animal, aquatic and microbial ecology; ecological genetics; human life history evolution; and biodiversity research. We appreciate multi-disciplinary and integrative research.

Within the Faculty of Science, the Department of Biology cooperates in terms of research and teaching with the Biodiversity Unit, which holds a Botanical Museum, a Botanical Garden, and two research stations (one in the Archipelago Sea, and one in the subarctic) and with the Department of Geography and Geology. The Department of Biology further collaborates in teaching and research with its counterpart in Åbo Akademi University.

The employment begins on 1.8.2026 or upon agreement.
