Master's Thesis Worker, Measurements of extracellular vesicles

Would you like to do impactful research in the cutting edge of natural sciences with superb colleagues from VTT and University of Helsinki who are top experts in their field? Do you want to build a science career and work in a versatile role at the interface of academy and industry?

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT’s research infra at VTT World

The University of Helsinki EV core is an academic research service facility dedicated to extracellular vesicle (EV) research providing infrastructure, state-of-the-art and emerging EV-technologies. The EV core is a co-operated venture of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences (Viikki campus) and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM). At the heart of EV core functions are development of novel technologies and rigor & standardization of EV research.

We are now looking for a Master’s thesis worker to work in nanometrology laboratory at VTT and EV core at University of Helsinki to support EU project METVES II.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived particles in body fluids, which have excellent potential as next-generation biomarkers for the early diagnosis of common diseases, such as cancer and thrombosis. This project aims to tap into the clinical potential of EVs by developing traceable measurements of number concentration, size distribution, refractive index (RI) and fluorescence intensity of cell-specific EVs in human blood and urine.

As a Master's thesis worker,

you will be working in METVES II project – “Standardisation of concentration measurements of extracellular vesicles for medical diagnoses”. The METVES II project focuses on developing the standardized concentration measurements of cell-specific EVs in human body fluids by developing reference materials and related reference measurement methods. (

In this position, your participation in METVES II project is a unique opportunity to learn and develop more reliable measurement methods for extracellular vesicles.

Your main responsibilities:

  • Literature review
    • Measurement methods
    • Uncertainty components
  • Design of the experiments & experiments
    • Nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA)
    • Flow cytometer (FCM)
  • Analysis of the results
  • Instructions for instrument calibration and uncertainty analysis
  • Write your M.Sc Thesis

The topic of the M.Sc. Thesis will be combination of cell biology and nanometrology.

Who we are looking for

  • Your studies are in the MSc Thesis stage at a Finnish university
  • Strong education in biology, pharmacy, biotechnology, measurement technology, physics, or another similar field
  • Interest in biological measurements and reliability of the measurements
  • Interest of measurement techniques and measurement uncertainty
  • Excellent written English and spoken Finnish/English language skills

Experience in biological measurements is considered an advantage, but not required.

As a person, we hope that you are:

  • Good collaboration skills and also willingness to carry out research independently with the guidance of your supervisors
  • Eagerness to learn new things and develop your competences in the field of metrology and nanotechnology
  • Ability to critically analyze and interpret the results of your work

With VTT, you’ll enjoy:

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organization, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth.
