Open Application - Machinery Design
Location: Helsinki, Turku or Pori (Finland)
Department: Machinery Design
Do you want to help design the heart of world-class vessels: propulsion machinery and systems that keep ships moving safely and efficiently in the most demanding marine environments? At Helsinki Shipyard, we specialize in tailor-made, high-class vessels for extreme conditions, from icy polar routes to advanced passenger ships.
Our legacy dates back to 1865. Since November 2023, we have been part of the Canadian Davie Group, strengthening our role on the global shipbuilding stage.
We are always interested in connecting with skilled professionals for our Machinery Design team. If you are curious about future opportunities, we warmly welcome your open application.
Â
🌍 About the Team
Our 30-person Machinery Design team is responsible for the design of ship propulsion machinery and related systems. The team’s scope covers:
Overall system design of propulsion machinery
Equipment specification and procurement
Detail design of machinery systems
Integration of machinery systems with other ship disciplines
Â
We work across the full project lifecycle, from basic design through procurement and detail design, in close cooperation with production, suppliers, and other engineering teams.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary design organization of approximately 120 professionals and a wider shipyard community of around 400 experts.
Â
đź’Ľ What Could Your Role Include?
Depending on your experience and interests, your role may include:
System-level responsibility for propulsion machinery or auxiliary systems
Developing and reviewing technical documentation and drawings
Coordinating detail design work with internal teams and external partners
Participating in equipment procurement and supplier collaboration
Supporting project planning, budgeting, and resourcing
Working closely with production to resolve technical challenges during construction
Â
The role can be tailored to suit your background, from hands-on technical design to coordination or specialist responsibilities.
Â
👤 Who Are We Looking For?
We welcome applications from both experienced machinery designers and professionals looking to grow into the role. Ideally, you:
Have a technical background (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in mechanical, marine, or energy engineering
Can read and understand technical drawings and machinery system documentation
Have experience in the design and dimensioning of piping systems for construction projects, such as district heating networks or power plants, and are interested in learning more about ships while deepening your technical expertise (previous experience with ships is preferred but not mandatory)
Are comfortable working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Communicate clearly in English, both spoken and written
Experience in shipbuilding, marine machinery, or propulsion systems is an advantage, but not a requirement. A proactive mindset and willingness to learn are highly valued.
Â
âš“ What Do We Offer?
The opportunity to work on technically demanding and iconic vessels
A key role in designing propulsion and machinery systems critical to vessel performance and safety
A collaborative and supportive engineering culture
Hybrid working model with offices in Helsinki, Turku, or Pori
A strong focus on sustainability, including participation in Helsinki’s joint sea monitoring initiative
Â
“The ship project takes from 2–3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port.”
— Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer
