Open application - Technical Designer, Interior Design

Location: Helsinki, Turku or Pori (Finland)

Department: Interior Design

Do you want to help shape the interiors of world-class passenger vessels, modern ice breakers and polar expedition ships? At Helsinki Shipyard, we specialize in tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers designed and built right here in the heart of Helsinki.

Our history dates back to 1865, and since November 2023, we’ve been part of the Canadian Davie Group, further strengthening our role in global shipbuilding.

We’re always looking for motivated and skilled Engineers or Architects to join our Interior Design team. If you’re interested in future opportunities within the department, we warmly welcome your open application!

🌍 About The Team

The Interior Design department is responsible for creating and coordinating everything related to the onboard spaces — from furniture and materials to functional systems like galley equipment, insulation, walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, and elevators. We focus on passenger cabins, public areas, crew spaces, and office environments.

Depending on the project type, you might work directly with the client’s architect (in passenger vessels) or take a more hands-on design role (in icebreakers and highly technical vessels). Either way, your work directly impacts the experience of those onboard.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary design organization of ~120 people, and a wider shipyard community of ~400 professionals.

💼 What Could Your Role Include?

Depending on your background and interests, your future responsibilities might include:

  • Creating interior design documentation and drawings

  • Aligning architectural design visions with technical execution

  • Supporting procurement and coordinating material specifications

  • Hands-on interior design for technical vessels

  • Collaborating with external architects, suppliers, and production

  • Participating in budgeting, project coordination, and design development

  • Being responsible for a technical system

  • Leading the design process of interior areas

The exact role will be shaped based on your experience and aspirations.

👤 Who Are We Looking For?

We welcome applications from both experienced designers and those early in their career with a strong motivation to grow. Ideally, you:

  • Have a background in technical design (for example, doors, windows, elevators, or equivalent machinery)

  • Sometimes, we might also have open positions for interior architects

  • Are familiar with AutoCAD or similar design tools

  • Have experience with project-based work and stakeholder collaboration

  • Enjoy balancing design work with technical coordination

  • Communicate fluently in English (written and spoken)

Experience in the marine industry is appreciated, but not required. A proactive mindset and the ability to handle multiple tasks will take you far!

⚓ What Do We Offer?

  • A chance to shape unique, functional interiors for remarkable vessels

  • Full-cycle involvement from sketches to seeing your design take physical shape

  • Collaboration with a skilled and supportive team

  • A flexible hybrid working model (remote + on-site depending on project phase)

  • A historic location in Hietalahti, Helsinki

  • A strong environmental commitment: we actively participate in Helsinki’s sea monitoring initiative

“The ship project takes from 2–3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port.” — Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer
