Postdoctoral Researcher in Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Cell and Molecular Biology, starting on 3 June 2024 or as agreed, for a maximum of 2,5 years.

The researcher will join the ERC-funded project The Life of Giant Phages lead by Assistant Professor Elina Laanto. We study the yet undescribed, large sized bacterial viruses, i.e. megaphages in addition to jumbophages. We utilize isolates that were recently obtained from freshwater environments and the giant phage collection will be also expanded during the project. Our research questions are focused on understanding the biology and ecology of these phages. Main aims in the project include characterization of the model system comprising the giant phage virion, genome, and life cycle. We are also interested in how megaphages compete with other phages. Also, ecological implications and abundance of boreal large sized phages will be studied using combined culture-based and ‘omics approaches.

Main responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher include experimental work with phage-host interactions, phage competition and studying the megaphage infected cells. While the postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to the current project, and jointly supervise students, there is also the possibility to develop your own interests within the framework of the project.

Who we are looking for

We expect the applicant to have a doctoral (PhD) degree in a discipline related to microbiology or similar and a strong interest in phage biology and phage-host interactions. Previous experience in microbiological methods, molecular biology and basic bioinformatics skills are required. Experience in microscopy, transcriptomics and/or metabolomics are an advantage. Good written and oral communication skills in English are required.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required, and proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position.
