Postdoctoral Researcher in Theoretical Evolutionary Biology

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher in sexual selection theory starting 1.12.2025 at the earliest, for 3 years. The fixed-term position is for an ERC Consolidator Grant project entitled “Unified Theory of Sexual Selection”.

The main task of the Postdoctoral Researcher is to develop models in sexual selection theory. In particular, the aim is to seek a common causal and mathematical structure that applies across models of sexual selection and sexual strategy and engages explicitly with the defining aspects of sexes and sexual selection.

We expect the candidates to have:

  • Mathematical modelling skills and high motivation to learn new skills.
  • Familiarity with a mathematical programming language (e.g., Matlab, Mathematica) is preferable but not essential.
  • Independence and problem-solving skills. There is flexibility in the project for an independent post-doc to develop their own ideas and sub-projects
  • Ability and motivation to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before the starting date. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 5–6 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 3600-4800 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Department of Biological and Environmental Science

The research in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science focuses on three core areas: evolutionary biology, natural resources and environment, and biological nanoscience. The Department building, Ambiotica, is an integral part of the University of Jyväskylä's Ylistönrinne Mathematics and Science Research Complex, which includes buildings of chemistry, physics and nanoscience.
