Professor (Assistant/Associate/Full) in Energy Technology in Mechanical Engineering

The Faculty of Technology at the University of Turku is looking for a Professor (full) or Assistant/Associate Professors (tenure track) in Energy Technology to join us in building a new area of expertise at the University of Turku. The position will be in the mechanical engineering unit, which belongs to the fast-growing Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Technology.

We are aiming for a start date in spring 2027, but we are flexible.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a Professor (full) or an Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) in Energy Technology.

We seek candidates whose work is on energy conversion technologies, for example linked to hydrogen as an energy carrier. The scope of the research can be from gaining a fundamental understanding of the underlying thermophysical processes, over developing new devices and technologies, to system-level modelling and analysis – research methods can be experimental or computational.

The research profile could be related to one or more of the following themes:

  • Hydrogen as an energy carrier
  • Renewable fuels and fossil-free energy carriers
  • Grid-scale energy storage (e.g. pumped hydro or thermal storage)
  • Cryogenic energy storage (e.g. liquid air energy storage)
  • Turbomachinery (e.g. turbines or high-temperature heat pumps)
  • Offshore energy systems (e.g. wave, tidal, or wind energy)
  • Biomass conversion and gasification

This is not an exhaustive list; we welcome applicants whose research complements the mechanical engineering research lines at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, see here more information about the department.

In addition to the research merits, we consider applicants’ merits broadly and value, for example, broad academic, professional, and societal networks; societal impact and outreach activities; experience in technology transfer; industrial and entrepreneurial experience; and multidisciplinary collaboration. For all positions, we value an active approach and enthusiasm for teaching, educational development, teaching experience and pedagogical studies.

The applicants may be appointed to a fixed-term associate or assistant professorship (tenure track) or to a permanent professor position (Full Professor) depending on their previous academic merits.

  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of scientific research.
  • For the position of Associate Professor, we emphasize an international track record of scientific research, teaching experience and societal influence. In addition to these, we value a track record of acquiring external research funding and business collaboration.
  • For the position of Full Professor we are looking for experienced and internationally distinguished experts who already have excellent publication production and success in obtaining external funding.

We value collegiality and promote equality, diversity, and inclusivity. We encourage all qualified applicants with different backgrounds to apply for our open positions.
