Project Manager, Afghanistan

CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation is an independent Finnish organisation that works to prevent and resolve conflicts through dialogue and mediation. Founded in 2000 by Nobel Peace Laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, we have since grown to be a leader in the field of international peacemaking.

CMI is expanding its efforts in Asia and seeks a Project Manager to lead its work on Afghanistan. The position of Project Manager is located in CMI’s Asia team.

The Project Manager will report to Head, Asia. The position is located in Helsinki or in Brussels, but frequent travel is required. The position is fixed-term until the end of 2022, with a possibility to extension. Preferred starting date is in March 2022.

 

The Project Manager will be responsible for:

  • Managing project planning, implementation and reporting, including budget management, in the Afghanistan project as well as leading the project team
  • Monitoring and analysing contextual developments in the field and conducting research on the country and the surrounding regions, e.g. conflict analyses and stakeholder mappings and providing substantive documents and briefs as needed
  • Representing CMI, liaising with partners and developing networks and partnerships
  • Producing new initiatives/concepts and fundraising for the project and contribution to programme development in Asia

 

A successful candidate is expected to:

  • Have a minimum of five (5) years of international experience in the field of dialogue, mediation or peacebuilding
  • Have a demonstrated strong interest in issues related to conflict resolution, understanding of key conflict dynamics in and around Afghanistan as well as practical (field) experience is considered an asset
  • Have solid leadership and project management skills (e.g. strategic development, budgeting, results-based management)
  • Have excellent communication and teamworking skills as well as experience in working with international organizations and on politically sensitive matters
  • Have excellent organisational and planning skills, creativity, gender sensitivity and good political judgement
  • Have a flexible attitude and ability to work in a dynamic, international team with sometimes tight timelines and under pressure
  • Have strong analytical and writing skills as well as good IT skills.
  • Have fluent written and spoken skills in English. Other language skills and knowledge of cultures in the region are an asset.
  • Be willing to travel to target countries with challenging operational contexts, if needed
  • Have a university degree from a relevant field
  • Commit to CMI values and principle of impartiality
