Research Engineer / Scientist, Etched Josephson Junctions
Are you interested in superconducting quantum device fabrication, developing cutting-edge nanofabrication processes, and looking for a new job opportunity? Would you like to develop innovative technology with superb colleagues who are top experts in their field? Do you want to build an excellent science career and work at the interface of the academy and industry? Are you enthusiastic about working with fascinating projects in state-of-the-art research facilities? VTT might be just the place for you.
VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning, and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2400 brilliant minds from 60 different nationalities focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT's tech & infra.
We are now looking for Research Engineer / Scientist, Etched Josephson Junctions to join our Quantum Computing Hardware Team (Microelectronics and Quantum Research) team.
As a Research Engineer / Scientist, you will have a key role in developing robust etch-based Josephson junction fabrication flows on 200 mm wafers. The work focuses on improving process stability, reproducibility, wafer-scale uniformity and yield to enable complex superconducting circuits and pilot-ready services. You will work hands-on in the Micronova cleanroom on sputter deposition, plasma etching and process integration.
Our team, Quantum Computing Hardware team, develops scalable superconducting device and integration technologies, from thin-film and junction process modules to pilot-ready process documentation. We collaborate with industrial and academic partners across Europe to enable reproducible, wafer-scale fabrication of quantum chips and related components.
As Research Engineer / Scientist, you will:
- Develop, optimize and qualify superconducting thin-film deposition and junction-stack processes on 200 mm wafers
- Develop and optimize dry etch (RIE/ICP-RIE) & wet etch processes; tune selectivity, profile and plasma damage
- Plan and execute short-loop experiments and design-of-experiments (DOE) to improve critical-current targeting, wafer-scale uniformity and junction yield
- Implement process monitoring and statistical process control (SPC) using standardized test structures; analyse KPI trends and drive corrective actions
- Coordinate and perform in-line/wafer-level electrical characterization (e.g. CIPT probing for junction evaluation, room-temperature wafer-level probing), SEM imaging, and correlate results with process parameters
- Support process transfer, scaling and qualification on 200 mm hardware (recipe porting, tool matching, documentation)
- Contribute to detailed process documentation (layer stacks, key process parameters, and design-relevant process windows) to support pilot-ready runs and technology transfer
- Operate cleanroom tools (sputter, plasma etch; PECVD is a plus), follow safety practices, and support tool troubleshooting together with the cleanroom staff
- Collaborate with internal characterization teams and external partners; contribute to project deliverables, pilot-run readiness and publications
Who we are looking for:
- MSc or PhD in Applied physics, Electrical engineering, Materials science, Micro/Nanotechnology or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on cleanroom experience, preferably in an industrial environment with a demonstrated track record in process development
- Strong experience with sputter deposition (DC/RF) of (superconducting) metallic thin films and vacuum tool operation
- Strong experience with dry etching (RIE/ICP-RIE)
- Experience with process characterization, electron microscopy, and data-driven optimization (metrology, DOE); familiarity with SPC is an advantage
- Ability to write clear process documentation and communicate effectively in English
- Ability to work safely and systematically in a cleanroom environment, and to collaborate in an international project setting
- Experience in superconducting devices / Josephson junctions and/or PECVD is a plus not required)
- Experience with in-line electrical characterization for junction evaluation (e.g. CIPT) is a plus; room-temperature wafer-level probing experience is desirable
- Knowledge of chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a plus
- If you are excited about this role but do not meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply – transferable fabrication and process integration experience is valued, even outside superconducting devices
As a person, we hope that you are:
A hands-on problem solver who enjoys working close to the tools, is meticulous about data quality and documentation, and has a strong safety mindset. You work independently when needed, but thrive in collaborative, cross-disciplinary teams and are comfortable communicating with both researchers and cleanroom professionals.
With VTT, you’ll enjoy:
