Research Engineer (Software Developer), Quantum algorithms and software

We are looking for an active and talented software developer with a strong background in software technologies, programming and maintaining software systems. As a Research Engineer / Software Developer, your key role would be to maintain and develop the software stack of the quantum computer (monitoring and calibration tools, scheduler, logging, etc., Python in Linux environment), you would be cooperating closely with other developers maintaining the hardware part, with researchers working on quantum algorithms. You identify and solve problems independently and creatively while working closely and flexibly with other team members. You focus on the design and details of the software, but ideally, you understand the big picture and can provide input and ideas to other components as well.

In this position, you have an opportunity to work with colleagues who develop Finland’s first quantum computer that will be available for quantum algorithm development. VTT is a member of leading European quantum technology research projects OpenSuperQQMiCS as well as national initiatives e.g. Quantum Technology Finland

With us, you will be responsible for 

  • Maintaining and improving the quantum computer software stack to keep it up and running
  • Developing additional software and scripts that help maintain the service
  • Develop workflows for the calibration and monitoring of a quantum computer

Who we are looking for

  • Ideally, you have a degree in computer science/computer engineering/physics or electronic engineering and at least 2 years of experience in programming/scripting and software development.
  • Experience with Linux environment and programming e.g. with Python.
  • Other programming or scripting experiences are a plus.
  • Systematic mind with good software development practices
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

Ideally, your background includes the following:  

  • Basics of administrating a Linux server
  • Experience with HPC environments
  • Knowledge of the basics of quantum mechanics
  • Experience with good practices in programming and software designing
