Research Manager, Safe and Connected Society

We are now looking for Research Manager to lead the strategic research agenda at Safe and Connected Society research area.

As a Research Manager, you are responsible for the visionary leadership of research activities in the research area. You lead the research agenda with high impact and ambitious approach. As a member of Safe and Connected Society leadership team you collaborate and contribute to the success of whole VTT, our customers and partners. The location of the position is in Espoo, Tampere or Oulu.

The job is located in VTT’s Safe and Connected Society research area. Research area focuses on top research for supporting safe and secure digitalization in commercial and societal applications. The key activities are in connectivity and cybersecurity solutions, space based remote sensing and various areas of activities in defence and security sector. We look at digitalization as a systemic change and through impact assessment; we evaluate new technologies and phenomena. We develop and validate various digital technologies in specialized test environments. We work globally with our clients and research partners to solve global challenges through impactful research. Our excellence is delivered by more than 130 researchers.


With us, you will be responsible for:

  • Following the public RDI environment widely and proactively guiding high impact research towards customer needs.
  • Building roadmaps and research project portfolio in the research area and in nominated challenge focuses.
  • Managing and coordinating public funding opportunities and project preparations internally.
  • Actively influencing RDI policies through networks e.g. relevant funding organizations ministries and the European Commission.
  • Creating and nurturing national and international collaboration networks with significant impact.
  • Acting as a thought leader who inspires and mentors scientists as well as influences continuous development and growth of your own research field.
  • Having an active role in academic collaborations as well as participation in development of strategic customer partnerships from research perspective.


 Your profile and experience:

  • Broad science & technology understanding in the research area and the ability to see where the organization and our partners are headed, define opportunities, and drive actions.
  • Strong motivation and track record in leading and coaching teams. You have several years’ RDI experience. You have experience in change management with the ability to engage and motivate others.
  • Understanding the application areas for “Safe and Connected Society” from both research and customer point of view. You have worked in or with companies and have an understanding of their needs and way of working.
  • Wide networks of different kinds of stakeholders: research organizations, funding organizations as well as companies both in Finland and internationally.
  • Passion for research and innovation and understanding of how research excellence can be applied to meet the industry needs. You have gained experience of practical research work at some point in your career
  • Understanding of the public RDI -funding policies, strategies and landscape in national and EU level.
  • Preferably PhD level in a relevant field.
  • Professional English and Finnish language skills (spoken and written).
