We are now looking for several Research Scientists / Senior Scientists (3) to join our Quantum Sensors team at Espoo.

Our team is part of VTT’s Microelectronics and Quantum Technology research area. Our international quantum teams are comprised of world-class experts, developing ground-breaking technologies in the fields of superconducting quantum computing technologies, quantum CMOS, solid state coolers, SQUID amplifiers, quantum sensors, and graphene-based detectors. We have a selection of competences from device simulation and design to nanofabrication in our world-class Micronova cleanrooms and state of the art characterization in our cryogenic laboratories. We do research in close collaboration with other VTT teams, research partners and customers both in Finland and abroad. We are members of the leading European quantum technology research projects as well as national initiatives. We contribute to VTT’s key strategical choice of creating the quantum leap in computing and sensing to solve global challenges.

Due to the growth of the quantum technologies at VTT we are now looking for several experts to join us:

As a Research Scientist, you will:

• conduct research on quantum sensing technologies (or quantum hardware),
• participate in the simulation, design, manufacture, and/or characterization of quantum devices,
• be part of national and international quantum technology networks,
• present your results internally, nationally, and internationally.

As a Senior Scientist, you will also:

• lead national and international projects,
• network with national and international quantum technology stakeholders,
• ideate new research topics together with the team and the network,
• prepare projects around the new topics for national and international public funding sources, as well as customer projects.

We are looking for Research Scientist /Senior Scientist to the following areas:

• Material science and characterization:
  • Superconductivity, tunnel junctions and interface characterization, metal-semiconductor interfaces and related components
  • Thin film deposition and structural characterization (SEM, XRD, XRR, ellipsometry, XPS, TEM)
  • Micro and nano fabrication and low temperature measurements.
• Microelectronics/integrated circuits technology, micro and nanofabrication technology, device characterization:
  • Knowledge of cleanroom operations (thin film deposition, lithography, etching, electroplating, etc.)
  • Bonding, dicing and device testing are assets.
• Cryogenics measurements and/or cryo-engineering with focus on low temperature physics:
  • Operation and instrumentation of cryogenic refrigerators (~ 1K and dilution refrigerators)
  • Low temperature measurements of superconductors and tunnel junctions
  • Good knowledge of Python is required
  • Experience in heat dissipation engineering is an asset

Additionally, you have:

• M.Sc. or D.Sc. in physics, engineering physics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or related fields,
• know-how in the fields of quantum technologies,fluent in spoken and written English,
• as an asset, ability to coordinate projects involving experts from materials physics, device design, manufacturing processes and characterization,
• for senior scientist positions: extensive experience of leading international projects.
