We are now looking for a visionary Research Team Leader for our Advanced Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics team.

The team is located in VTT’s Nuclear Energy research area. The team is an international team comprised of world-class experts on research of fracture mechanics and fatigue of materials in radiation and environmental conditions of nuclear power plants. As the primary user of the Centre for Nuclear Safety hot cell facilities, the team includes engineers and scientists that conduct sophisticated testing of non- and radioactive materials for clients and research partners both in Finland and abroad. The Advanced Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics team works in close collaboration with our customers and other research teams at VTT and with business development.

This is a key role in the organisation in which you will have the opportunity to build and drive forward the impactful research and to solve customer challenges.

Your responsibilities as a Research Team Leader:

  • Visionary leadership of the team. You will be the spokesperson for the research topic and take an active role in promoting its visibility.
  • Create impact by research work resulting in longer, safer and more economical operation of nuclear power plants.
  • Relevance and ambition of the team’s project portfolio and impactful collaboration with companies, policy makers and other stakeholders.
  • Working as one of the key contributors of the area and participating in relevant research projects also yourself.
  • As member of the research area’s leadership team, you find ways to combine competences and foster internal-/external collaboration to ensure wider impact.
  • This is a line manager role, so you are responsible for coaching the team and team members’ performance as an inspirational leader. Employee wellbeing, recruitment and team’s competence development are your key priority.

Your profile and experience:

  • Excellent substance knowledge and understanding of the team’s research content.
  • Proven research skills with a strong track record in driving excellence and impact in the area of research. You have a Master of Science degree in a relevant field or equivalent science experience. A doctoral degree is considered as an asset.
  • As a leader, you want to create positive drive and get people excited by coaching and setting ambitious targets together with the team. Strong and proven interpersonal skills are mandatory in the position.
  • Good communication skills and ability to build high value research collaboration in the area.
  • You are familiar with different funding instruments such as Horizon Europe and Business Finland.
  • You should be proficient in English language.
