More about us:
Founded by Maija Itkonen (CEO) and Christopher Landowski (CTO), Onego Bio is a spin-off from Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre. We use precision fermentation to produce Bioalbumen®, the world’s first non-animal egg protein with an amino-acid sequence identical to the protein found in a conventional egg.
In April 2024, Onego closed a $40 million Series A, one of the largest food-tech raises in the Nordics, bringing total funding to €65 million / $70.8 million. In March, Onego announced plans for our flagship U.S. manufacturing facility in Jefferson County, Wisconsin capable of producing Bioalbumen® equivalent to the output of six million laying hens. Most recently, the U.S. FDA issued a GRAS “No Questions” letter for Bioalbumen®, clearing the way for commercial launch.
Bioalbumen® is used as a drop-in replacement for traditional egg protein in baked goods, confections, beverages, and specialty applications - delivering the same taste, high-quality nutrition, and the same or improved functionality vs. conventional egg protein powder.
Onego Bio’s global headquarters are based in Helsinki, Finland and commercial headquarters are in San Diego, California. Onego Bio is a founding member of Food Fermentation Europe and the Precision Fermentation Alliance.
