Researchers, Photonics, Sensing and Quantum Technologies

Are you interested in nano- and microelectronics and looking for a new job opportunity in the field?

VTT is one of the leading research organizations in Europe and we are operating the largest R&D cleanroom in the Nordic countries, located in Micronova premises, Espoo. We develop innovative enabling technologies and apply them to practical micro- and nanosystems. We work closely with global players in the microelectronics field, including demanding industrial partners.  What unites us at VTT are the curiosity, passion of learning and devotion to finding solutions to global challenges and answers to our customers’ needs. You can familiarize with us further by exploring VTT’s research infra through VTT World.

We are looking for researchers with strong interest in experimental work and ambition to develop in their career. Our current need is for experienced researchers to take responsibility on the process and technology development in one of the following research topics; silicon based photo and X-ray detectors, graphene based biosensors and sensor integration, 2D material based active devices in integrated photonics, wafer-scale 3D integration, or silicon and superconductor based quantum circuits. We value ability to identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly in a team.

With us, you will be responsible for:

  • Technology development in one of the research fields as part of the team
  • Designing new hardware components and electrical/photonic circuits
  • Fabrication of such components in our extensive cleanroom (Micronova) with aid of team members and cleanroom operators
  • Characterization of the components in our measurement labs
  • Identifying and solving the key issues within your domain of expertise
  • Communicating and solving those issues in tight collaboration with others at VTT
  • Communicating and solving problems with external partners

We expect you to have:

We value experience and interest on semiconductor or superconductor physics, device and process development, and a clear mindset for experimental work. In your cover letter, please specify on which of the research topic(s) mentioned above you are interested in. We expect a master or PhD degree in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering or in other closely related field. Your background should cover the basics of semiconductor physics and electronics at device level, although circuit design, numerical modeling and practical programming skills are certainly welcome. You are proficient in English.

We are interested in both junior and senior professionals. Depending on your background and experience, it is possible to expand the responsibilities above towards e.g. project management. .

Ideally, your background includes the following:

  • Master degree or Ph.D. in experimental physics, electrical engineering or related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in research on your area of expertise
  • Cleanroom and/or device design experience
  • At least basic programming skills

As a person, you strive for excellent results but also prioritize and make pragmatic choices. You are focused and systematic. You contribute to a positive team spirit and prioritize the needs of the team high. You are hard working but you also communicate, collaborate and delegate effectively. You are eager to work with new topics with open-minded and curious attitude. You are able to bring clarity over complexity and identify the essential bottlenecks. In addition, you have the ability and patience to tolerate uncertainty and unexpected outcomes.
