Senior Lecturer in Philosophy
Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy for a fixed-term position between August 3, 2026, and December 31, 2031. The reason for the fixed-term position is a substitution.
The position of the Senior Lecturer includes teaching and thesis supervision in Philosophy and the tasks related to academic guidance and counselling at the Bachelor's and Master's Degree Education in Social Sciences and Philosophy. As a field of teaching and research Philosophy is generally directed at all aspects of reality and approaches its problems with conceptual and argumentative methods. At the University of Jyväskylä, philosophical research converges on philosophy of the human condition in the broadest sense of the term. The research areas are linked to the focus areas of research at the department.
Who we are looking for
The position of the Senior Lecturer includes teaching and supervision tasks in philosophy serving the degree programmes of the department and the whole university, with special emphasis on history of philosophy, metaphysics, and epistemology. Teaching and supervision in the department’s joint programmes and active research in philosophy are required. The applicant is required to show a record of scientific research proven by publications, capacity for high quality teaching based on research, and capacity for thesis supervision. The senior lecturer is also required to have a doctoral degree relevant to the position. The position has emphasis on teaching.
The duties and qualification requirements of Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The primary language of instruction is Finnish but English is also used. Good proficiency in English and the ability to teach in English will be considered an advantage. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The salary for a Senior Lecturer is determined based on the task-specific demand level 6–7 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 4200-5500 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. We also support your relocation to Jyväskylä with a settling-in allowance.
