Do you want to be our next Summer Trainee in our team Integrated Energy Systems and Technologies team?

As a Summer Trainee, your key goals are to support the development of data-driven tools and insights for smart greenhouse energy management.

In this position, you will work hands-on with real-world greenhouse and smart grid data: cleaning and combining datasets, analysing patterns using data analytics and machine learning methods, and supporting the development of AI-based concepts such as “AI gardener”. Your work will combine desk-based data analysis with occasional field visits to greenhouses for data collection and interviews.

Our team, Integrated Energy Networks and Technologies, works on data-driven solutions for energy efficiency, flexibility in distributed energy systems, and optimization algorithms for planning and operating the current and future energy system.

The Integrated Energy Networks and Technologies team focuses on providing technology and software solutions to plan and operate a carbon-free energy system across sectors. In this work specifically, the team of researchers focuses on combining smart grid data, user behaviour, and AI methods to enable more efficient and sustainable energy use. Our work supports VTT’s broader mission of solving global sustainability challenges by developing scalable digital and data-driven solutions for the energy transition.

What would your responsibilities as a include?

  • Cleaning, parsing, and combining heterogeneous datasets (e.g. time series, sensor data, operational data).
  • Performing exploratory data analysis and basic big data analytics under supervision.
  • Applying machine learning methods for pattern recognition and predictive analysis.
  • Supporting the drafting and testing of AI/ML-based concepts (e.g. “AI gardener” logic).
  • Collecting data during greenhouse visits and documenting observations.
  • Conducting and summarising greenhouse interviews together with the project team.
  • Preparing short technical summaries, figures, or internal reports based on analysis results.
  • Collaborating closely with supervisors and other team members on a weekly basis.
  • Optionally: supporting the setup or documentation of data management infrastructure (e.g. remote data connections).

We're lookign for someone who:

  • Is a Master’s-level student in a relevant field, such as:
    • Data Science, Computing Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Signal Processing or Statistical Data Analytics
  • Has experience with data processing and analysis, preferably using Python (e.g. pandas, NumPy).
  • Has basic understanding of machine learning or statistical modelling (required).
  • Is familiar with AI/ML libraries (e.g. scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow) (nice to have).
  • Is comfortable working with real-world, imperfect datasets.
  • Can read technical documentation and write short reports in English. As this work may require interactions with local communities, Finnish or Swedish is also required.
  • Is able to work independently but also collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team.

As a person, we hope that you are:

  • Are curious and motivated to learn new methods and tools in data analytics and AI.
  • Enjoy solving practical problems using data rather than working only with clean, theoretical examples.
  • Are proactive, structured, and willing to ask questions when needed.
  • Value teamwork and open communication.
  • Are interested in applying data and AI to support sustainability and energy transition goals.

What would we offer you?

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth. Read more about our strategy – the path of exponential hope.
  • Career opportunities, top-level mentors. At VTT, your skills are appreciated and supported with the opportunity to learn from the top experts in their field. You’ll get to discover our community of nearly 2400 experts representing 60 nationalities working across cutting-edge fields of science and technology.
  • Meaningful projects, real responsibility. With us, you get to take on meaningful projects and create innovative scientific and technical solutions. We treat all employees as equals and give you real responsibility from the start. VTT is a caring employer that supports your growth and work–life balance and offers a range of well-being services.
