Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Futures Studies
Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku invites applications for a position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Futures Studies.
The position will be filled on the basis of the applicant's previous merits as a fixed-term assistant professor (phase I) for 3-5 years or associate professor (phase II) for 2-4 years.
The position is located at the Finland Futures Research Centre. Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC) is a department at Turku School of Economics that conducts interdisciplinary futures studies, teaching, and training, as well as development projects. The FFRC is an international pioneer in the field and a leading academic institution in futures studies education at both the master’s and doctoral levels.
Job description
The assistant or associate professor must have a track record in the fields of futures studies and/or foresight studies (e.g., strategic foresight, corporate foresight, regional foresight, technology foresight). We consider peer-reviewed scientific publications in leading international journals in the fields of futures studies and foresight studies to be particular scientific merits. Second, we consider teaching experience in the field of futures studies or in an academic research field that is thematically and methodologically closely related to be a special asset.
The assistant or associate professor conducts and supervises scientific research, gives science-based education, follows developments in science, and participates in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.
The assistant or associate professor is expected to acquire for both domestic and international research funding. The successful candidate is also expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching, the coordination and development of teaching, and the university administrative duties assigned to them.
The assistant or associate professor supports the development of the unit’s interdisciplinary educational programs and related research, and participates in applying for and managing research project funding.
The assistant or associate professor participates in the unit’s development in accordance with its strategy and performs duties arising from membership in university administrative bodies, as well as other duties assigned to them.
Who we are looking for
Tenure track –positions are meant for researchers who are pass the postdoc phase. When selecting a person for the assistant professor phase (phase I), especially academic potential and motivation for an academic career are taken into consideration. The tenure track associate professor phase (phase II) is intended for a high-level researcher, whose qualifications indicate substantial scientific potential. Requirements
The person appointed to the position is required to meet the eligibility requirements laid down in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure (Section 29). Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for the position by the application deadline.
A person selected for the post of assistant or associate professor must possess an appropriate doctoral degree, ability to conduct independent scientific work and experience in management of scientific research. In addition, the person must have evidence of international co-operation in their field of study, and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.
When assessing the merits of the applicants, special emphasis will be put on academic potential and quality.
The success in this position requires proficiency of Finnish language. The successful candidate is expected to acquire sufficient proficiency in Finnish to perform the duties of the role within three years. Support is provided for language study.
Additionally, the position requires good command of English.

The following will be considered as particular merits for the applicant:
- broad knowledge of futures studies and foresight research, along with related academic achievements, such as peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals,
- proven expertise in the application of futures studies, and
- teaching experience in futures studies.
Experience in leading research projects, experience in working with the business community, and experience in national and international cooperation networks are also considered special merits.

Salary and trial period
The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities for teaching and research personnel. The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.
The position is subject to a six-month trial period.
