Your tasks

Significant climate hazards include the rapid reduction in the length of time that Arctic lakes are covered by ice and changes in snow cover, both of which have a direct impact on northern communities and their environments. FROST is a consortium project funded by NORDFORSK (www.frost-lakes.com). The project brings together Indigenous and local knowledge, as well as the natural and social sciences, to understand how warmer winters are transforming Arctic lakes and related cultural practices. The project  at the Arctic Centre examines the influence of climate change on winter fishing and how it is  adapting to these changes. Emphasising holistic research, the integration of  traditional knowledge and the development of predictive models, the project represents a significant step forward in scientific understanding and community resilience in the Arctic.

Researchers with a background in anthropology, social ecology, ecology,  ethnology or biology, for example, are considered qualified for the position. The researcher will conduct and coordinate field work  in northern Finland, Sweden and Norway. The main tasks are to co-create knowledge with local fishers by using collaborative methods such as interviews and  participatory workshops. The results will be published in high-quality scientific journals and feedback will be provided to the communities.  This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a scientific career while working and living in the northern environment of Rovaniemi.
