Postdoctoral Researcher to Medical Bioinformatics Centre
Are you interested in applying artificial intelligence and high-performance computing in medical research? Join our research group to explore how molecular factors influence diseases and how they can be used in developing new treatment strategies.
Turku Bioscience Centre has an open fixed-term position for a Postdoctoral Researcher until 31 December 2027. The employment will start in January 2026 or as agreed.
Turku Medical Bioinformatics Centre (https://elolab.utu.fi) at Turku Bioscience Centre is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our Research Council of Finland project that develops and applies artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to analyze large-scale omics datasets.
The project aims to identify molecular factors influencing disease development and investigate how this understanding can be utilized in advancing treatments for immune-mediated diseases and cancer. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to medical research with potential major impacts on human health.
The research will be carried out in close collaboration with the University of Turku, the Finnish IT Center for Science (CSC/ELIXIR), and experts in biomedicine, providing a unique environment for multidisciplinary research and excellent opportunities for contributing to international development of the field.
Job description
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will join our Research Council of Finland project focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing in large-scale omics data analysis. Your work will focus on method development and their application to biomedical research questions. Key responsibilities include:
- analyzing and modeling large omics datasets
- developing and applying machine learning methods to biomedical questions
- keeping up with rapidly evolving methods in the field
- collaborating with biomedical researchers to assess the biological and medical significance of findings
- publishing research results in international scientific journals and presenting at conferences
- participating in national and international collaboration networks
This position offers the opportunity to deepen your expertise at the interface of artificial intelligence and bioinformatics and to work closely with leading experts across disciplines.
A special focus of the project is to develop a high-performance computing framework for mass spectrometry proteomics to enhance efficient processing and interpretation of large datasets using deep learning algorithms and GPU computing. To ensure broad applicability and robustness, the framework will be tested in both synthetic and real-world experimental setups, with a particular focus on identifying early disease markers.
Who we are looking for
We expect you to be motivated and ready to work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and biomedicine.
We require you to have:
- a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, or another relevant field
- experience in analyzing large biological datasets (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics, or proteomics)
- programming skills (e.g. R, Python)
- interest in high-performance computing and algorithm optimization (e.g. GPU computing)
- ability to work both independently and in collaboration within a multidisciplinary research environment
- initiative and self-direction
- excellent spoken and written English
We consider as a plus:
- experience in analyzing proteomics or mass spectrometry data
- experience in machine learning, deep learning, or method development in bioinformatics
- publications or other evidence of research in artificial intelligence or bioinformatics
We value collegiality and promote equality, diversity, and inclusivity. We encourage all qualified applicants with different backgrounds to apply for our open positions.
Benefits
We provide you with diverse opportunities to grow as a researcher and to make an impact in your field, including:
- top-level research environment
- access to cutting-edge technologies and unique datasets
- versatile tasks at the intersection of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and biomedicine
- flexible working hours
- support for continuous professional development and excellent networking opportunities both nationally and internationally
Turku – a great place to live and work
Finland is known for its high quality of life, safety, and excellent public services. It’s a country where things just work – from public transport to healthcare and education. Families especially benefit from the generous state support: affordable, high-quality daycare and free schooling that consistently ranks among the best in the world.
If you're moving with children, the city of Turku is a fantastic choice. It offers English-language “language showers” and pre-schooling to help kids ease into a new language environment. There are also private, state-subsidized daycare centres that operate in English, French, or Russian – making it easier for international families to settle in. For school-aged children, the Turku International School provides both basic and upper-secondary education entirely in English.
Health and insurance – we’ve got you covered
We care about the well-being of our staff. That’s why we offer comprehensive occupational healthcare services, including preventive care and general medical treatment. In addition, all employees are covered by University’s travel and occupational accident insurance.
