Department of Economics at Turku School of Economics, University of Turku, opens a position of a Postdoctoral Researcher for fixed term from 1.8.2026 to 31.7.2028. The post of Postdoctoral Researcher is positioned at the Department of Economics. The Department of Economics conducts high-quality research in economics and belongs to the leading Finnish educators of economics at all degree levels. In the Turku School of Economics, the department is responsible for the research profile area Economic Policy and Markets.
Specifically, the position is part of a research project that analyzes the effects of residential environments on the long-term socioeconomic outcomes of children, families, and households in Finland. The project also examines the role of peer groups and broader neighborhood factors as mechanisms underlying neighborhood effects. The studies will make use of extensive Finnish individual-level register data, residential and family history data, as well as small-area geospatial data and neighborhood indicators. The empirical analyses will be both descriptive and quasi-experimental in nature. The project aims to produce new research-based knowledge on how childhood and family residential environments shape educational, labor market, and wellbeing trajectories, and how this knowledge can be used to inform child, education, regional, and housing policy.
The employment is expected to start on 1.8.2026 or as agreed.
Job description
The tasks of a Postdoctoral Researcher include participating in all research activities related to the project as part of the research team. This includes responsibilities for research design, data management, and econometric analysis. In addition we expect a small amount of teaching, service and administrative duties.

Essential requirements
The qualification requirements for the position are stipulated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure.
The postdoctoral researcher is required to hold an applicable doctoral degree, primarily in economics or in another field closely related to the position. The doctoral degree must be completed by the end of the application period.
In addition, the person selected for the position is expected to have demonstrated independent and high-quality scholarly work in empirical economics. Research areas central to the position include, for example, urban and regional economics, labor economics, economics of education, public economics, health economics, and research on inequality and social mobility. A successful candidate will have a strong research orientation, strong capacity for independent empirical research, and good proficiency in English.
Desirable qualifications
- Familiarity with large-scale individual-level register data, geospatial and small-area data, and longitudinal data is considered an advantage for the position.
- Expertise in modern microeconometric and quasi-experimental methods is also considered an advantage.
- Experience in economic research on children, families, education, labor markets, housing, residential segregation, or neighborhood effects.
Particular merit will be given to experience in economic research that combines individual-, family-, school-, or area-level data, as well as to the ability to produce both internationally high-quality scholarly publications and societally relevant research-based knowledge to support decision-making.

Salary and trial period
The salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher at the start of an employment is typically 3800–4300 €/month depending on previous experience and qualifications.
The position has a trial period of six (6) months.
