University Teacher in Mathematics

Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to recruit a University Teacher in Mathematics starting January 2nd 2026, or as soon as possible after that for five years. The fixed-term position is for initiating the mathematics teaching in a new bachelor’s program.

The University of Jyväskylä initiates a new education program in Bachelor's Degree Programme in Immersive Software Engineering and AI in the fall of 2026. We are recruiting a university teacher to participate in the planning and implementation of mathematics education regarding the new program.

A central strength of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is analysis, which has long traditions with us. Many of our research groups focus on analysis on different topics such as inverse problems, analysis on metric spaces, geometric measure theory, partial differential equations, calculus of variations, and geometric analysis. Our statistics research is both theoretical and practical, developing new efficient estimation methods and skills to predict, suggest, and make conclusions from data more accurately. We are looking for a person to complement the expertise in our department.

The responsibilities of a university teacher include active participation in mathematics teaching and research. You will be responsible for the planning and delivering mathematics courses for the new international bachelor’s program in software engineering and AI. The courses are being developed in close collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an enthusiastic teacher with preferably a doctoral degree. Knowledge and experience in the fields of software engineering and AI related mathematics and statistics are considered beneficial. You are expected to develop lecture materials and teaching methods. Experience in teaching and pedagogic competence is also considered beneficial.

The duties and qualification requirements of a University Teacher are stipulated by  the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Good proficiency in English and the ability to teach in English are vital for this position as the language of instruction in the bachelor's program is English. The ability to teach also in Finnish will be considered an advantage. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The salary for a University Teacher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 5 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 3600-4100 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

  5. A maximum of five publications, which must be numbered according to the list of publications (as one PDF file) or a PDF file with public links to the 5 chosen publications.
  6. A short description (max 3 pages + references) of the applicant’s academic research, scientific merits and research leadership merits, including a clarification on received external funding.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis and geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry, the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups.
