The Faculty of Technology is looking for a doctoral researcher for a three-year fixed-term employment relationship. The assignment starts 1.1.2025 (or upon mutual agreement) and ends on 31.12.2027

The position is related to the Photonics Research and Innovation (PREIN) doctoral pilot program

I-DEEP (Innovative doctoral education ecosystem for photonics) which is coordinated by the University of Tampere and involves also the University of Eastern Finland, Aalto University, Åbo Akademi, University of Oulu, University of Jyväskylä, and University of Turku. This program promotes possibilities for industrial collaborations through partnership with VTT and Photonics Finland. In total 72 doctoral researchers will be employed through this program in partner universities.

I-DEEP is committed to the following strategic pillars:

  • Accelerated graduation time: accelerated curriculum and more intensive supervision to ensure that the graduates enter the workforce rapidly.
  • Innovative approaches to doctoral studies: doctoral studies include mobility periods, soft skill development initiatives, nurturing a culture of innovation, mentoring, workshops and collaborative projects with industry.
  • Skilled workforce for R&D in industry: research projects are closely aligned with the real-world needs of the photonics industry allowing for students to gain practical insights and industry-specific skills and ensure that the graduating doctors are well-prepared for roles in research and development.

Job description

We are now looking for one doctoral researcher for a three-year fixed-term contract, funded by the national I-DEEP doctoral education pilot. If the applicant does not have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, they must apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree during the 2024 application periods via the Studyinfo.fi -service. Doctoral researchers for this position must be studying for a doctoral degree in the Faculty of Science (EXACTUS) or the Faculty of Technology (DPT). 

The position cannot be filled by an individual who has already completed a doctoral degree or has been granted the right to study for a doctoral degree before November 1, 2023. The doctoral researcher position requires residence in Finland.

The dissertations of the doctoral researchers are focused on research projects conducted at the University of Turku which are supporting the aims and goals of the PREIN flagships. The project that is searching for a doctoral researcher is:

  Photonic sensor tools for control of photonic manufacturing

  • The project is about developing of sensor fusion system to control laser based production system. It aims to utilize modern photonic sensors for thermal, visual and acoustic emissions of a thermal process using laser beam and control the process via date measured and analyzed by AI, thus forming a digital data base about the process.
  • We specifically seek a person with previous background on laser based manufacturing or metal additive manufacturing, photonic sensors and sensor fusion.

The doctoral researcher's tasks include conducting their own doctoral research and completing doctoral courses. In addition, the position may involve participation of doctoral training events of the PREIN program.

The target time for completing a doctoral degree is three years.

Who we are looking for

A Master‘s degree in a field of relevant research topis (theoretical physics, physics, materials science, materials engineering, chemistry or other relevant field) is required.

Additionally, applicants must have completed a higher education degree or otherwise demonstrated the ability to pursue postgraduate studies and complete a doctoral degree according to the research plan. The eligibility requirements for doctoral researchers are specified in the University of Turku's regulations.

The doctoral researcher position requires residence in Finland.

Salary and trial period

The salaries are determined in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel. It consists of a task-specific salary component and a personal performance salary component. The task-specific salary component of a doctoral researcher is at level 2–4, depending the progress of the doctoral project. The personal performance component, added on top of the task-specific base salary is also paid. The starting salary for a doctoral researcher varies between 2500-3300 euros per month depending on the progress of the doctoral dissertation and the person’s experience and skills.

The position has a probationary period of six months.
