VTT Summer of Changemakers: Research Trainee, Energy Systems

Do you want to participate in solving challenges related to the decarbonisation of energy, integration of large amounts of wind and solar power, and electrification of energy sectors? Are you all about science and technology? VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2023 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2100 brilliant minds from 50 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

Do you want to be our next Summer Trainee in our Design and Operation of Energy systems Team? Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!

As a Research Trainee, your key goals are to learn and use our tools to improve them. In this position, you will have an essential role in the development of our tools through dataset acquisition and running them. This position is linked to our current EU projects ELEXIA (https://www.elexia-project.eu) and MOPO but not exclusively.

Our team, Design and Operation of Energy system, works on open-source optimisation tool development for the energy system. Our tools enable comprehensive analysis of energy systems with high shares of variable renewable power generation and increasing demand side participation. The tools are used to find the best ways to address climate change and other environmental concerns related to energy in different parts of the world.

What would your responsibilities as a Research Trainee include?

Depending on your skills and interests, your responsibilities could include tool testing and/or data acquisition. Data will be stored in SQL databases and are used in a data flow for the models. Our tools are written in Julia and python programming languages e.g. SpineOpt (https://github.com/Spine-project/SpineOpt.jl), or Predicer (https://github.com/vttresearch/Predicer) but other tools may be used. The position is completely computer-based, and no laboratory experiment is to be expected.

Who we are looking for?

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in energy systems or related
  • You have programming experience in Julia or Python
  • Experience in SQL is considered a merit
  • You are curious and open-minded
  • You have some experience with building energy performance calculations
  • Good command of the English language

As a person, we hope that you are:

A curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start. You are also a team player with strong collaboration skills, online and on-site, who wants to drive a positive impact in the world. You are also able to work independently. You should be well-organised and be able to document your work as you go.

What would we offer you?

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth. Read more about our strategy – the path of exponential hope.

You’ll get to discover our community of over 2100 experts representing more than 50 nationalities working across cutting-edge fields of science and technology.
  • Meaningful projects, real responsibility. With us, you get to take on meaningful projects and create innovative scientific and technical solutions as part of our Design and Operation of Energy systems team. We treat all employees as equals and give you real responsibility from the start. VTT is a caring employer that supports your growth and work–life balance and offers a range of well-being services.
