VTT Summer of Changemakers: Research Trainee, Integrated photonics testing

Are you interested in optics and photonics testing and looking for a new job opportunity in the field? Would you like to develop innovative technology with superb colleagues who are top experts in their field? Are you ready for optical component testing in state-of-the-art research facilities? VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2023 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2100 brilliant minds from 50 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

We are now looking for a Research Trainee to join our Silicon photonics team. Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!

As a Research Trainee, your key goal is to test and characterize photonic chips and modules developed at VTT. These typically include optical waveguides and waveguide circuits processed on silicon wafers and operating at near and mid-infrared wavelengths. Testing is based on the high-precision alignment of optical fibers to the optical chips and the use of broadband light sources, tunable lasers, optical spectrum analyzers, and other such test equipment.

Our Silicon photonics team develops photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on silicon chips, as well as their use in many different applications from optical sensing and imaging to communication and computing. Work is done in close collaboration with other teams, including the Quantum photonics team. Our R&D work aims to miniaturize optical systems on small chips and to open new market opportunities in wearable health, industrial sensing, autonomous vehicles, quantum computing, and many other applications.

As a Research Trainee, you will:

  • Prepare samples for optical testing
  • Contribute to test setup development
  • Measure optical transmission spectra and other optical properties from photonic chips and modules
  • Measure some electrical and/or RF properties from photonic chips and modules
  • Summarize, analyse and document the measurement results
  • Potentially also contribute to optical design and simulations

Who we are looking for?

  • You have at least a basic understanding of photonics, including terms like wavelength, polarization, optical waveguide, optical fiber, laser, and optical spectroscopy
  • You have completed at least one year of university studies in some relevant field, such as physics, electronics, or metrology
  • You have some in-depth theoretical know-how or hands-on experience (lab exercise or similar) in at least one of the following technologies that could be relevant for your work at VTT (remember to describe it in your application): Photonics theory, optical waveguides, optical fibers, lasers, spectroscopy, optical sensors, optical communication, microscopy, optical measurements, electrical measurements, RF measurements, high-precision assembly.

As a person, we hope that you are:

  • A team player that can effectively collaborate with your VTT colleagues
  • Interested to learn new skills in photonics testing
  • Able to document your work and communicate with your colleagues in English, which is our primary language at VTT.

The ideal VTT Changemaker is a curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start. You are also a team player with strong collaboration skills who wants to drive positive impact in the world.

What would we offer you?

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth. Read more about our strategy – the path of exponential hope.
  • Career opportunities, top-level mentors. At VTT, your skills are appreciated and supported with the opportunity to learn from the top experts in their field. You’ll get to discover our community of over 2100 experts representing more than 50 nationalities working across cutting-edge fields of science and technology.
  • Meaningful projects, real responsibility. With us, you get to take on meaningful projects and create innovative scientific and technical solutions as part of our Silicon photonics team. We treat all employees as equals and give you real responsibility from the start. VTT is a caring employer that supports your growth and work–life balance and offers a range of well-being services.
