VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2022 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds from 48 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

Do you want to be our next Research Trainee in fuel performance as part of our Reactor Analysis team? Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!

As a Research Trainee in fuel performance, your key goals are application and development of fuel performance codes that are used in the safety analyses of a nuclear reactor. In this position, you will have an essential role in the development of VTT’s own fuel performance code FINIX.

Our Reactor analysis team works on independent safety analyses on nuclear fuel behaviour, reactor physics, reactor dynamics, and spent fuel characterization. This multidisciplinary team also studies solutions for next generation reactors including small modular reactors, district heating reactors, and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. The research goals aim at solving systemic challenges related to carbon-neutral and flexible energy systems as well as safety of nuclear energy in Finland.

What would your responsibilities as a Research Trainee in fuel performance include?

  • You will use your computational skills in fuel performance code applications and model development
  • You will apply and develop your experimental skills in data interpretation and analyses
  • You will use your communication and networking skills in research project(s) that apply multidisciplinary networks inside VTT and internationally
  • You will use your writing skills in reporting to interest groups.

Who we are looking for?

To succeed in the position, you would have following background and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering physics, nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other suitable area
  • Competence in computer tools
  • Good communication skills in English are essential and capability to communicate in Finnish is beneficial
  • Positive attitude for collaborative work
  • Previous knowledge/experience of reactor physics, nuclear fuel behaviour, thermal mechanics, or experimental research work are considered as assets.

As a person, we hope that:

  • You have good networking skills, and you enjoy working in a multidisciplinary research environment
  • You deliver according to the targets and take responsibility of your actions
  • You are a problem solver with scientific curiosity and proactive attitude
  • You are flexible in reorientating to new scientific problems or customer needs.

We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start.

What would we offer you?

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth. You’ll get to discover our community of over 2000 experts representing more than 40 nationalities working across cutting-edge fields of science and technology

  • Meaningful projects, real responsibility. With us, you get to take on meaningful projects and create innovative scientific and technical solutions as part of our Reactor analysis team. We treat all employees as equals and give you real responsibility from the start. VTT is a caring employer that supports your growth and work–life balance and offers a range of well-being services.
