We are looking for a motivated research trainee or a master’s thesis worker to research future wireless network technologies and systems. Especially, the work will concentrate on simulations of such technologies and systems. In practice, this means developing simulation models for such technologies and systems, running simulation campaigns, and analyzing the results. We are using the ns-3 network simulator (https://www.nsnam.org/), but also other simulators are used if needed. The work will be done in collaboration with a senior expert and other project team members at VTT.

Our team focuses on the development of satellite and terrestrial communications solutions for demanding application areas such as autonomous and remote-controlled systems, and industrial users. We develop also situational awareness solutions to enable autonomous operations and to optimize the use of spectrum for future communication systems. Simulation studies are an important part of the development of such new demanding solutions. The team is located in Oulu and Espoo, the open position is in Oulu premises.

What would your responsibilities include?

  • State-of-the-art literature review on the topic to be studied
  • Familiarization with the simulation tools to be used
  • Development of new simulation models or enhancing existing models with new features
  • Running simulations and analyzing the results 
  • Writing user manual for the developed simulation model/features
  • Reporting on simulation result analysis in a form of a research report, conference paper, or master thesis. 

The content of the work will be tailored according to your skills and practical experience, as well as the current status of the ongoing projects. We are providing interesting and challenging work in a dynamic research team. This opens excellent possibilities for you to participate both in national and international R&D projects. 

A specific project to work on: We have an ongoing project to develop a network simulator for an upcoming multi-layered satellite constellation network. Alternatively, further development of the DECT-2020 NR model could be possible.

What we expect you to have:

  • Basic knowledge of wireless technologies (e.g., WiFi, LTE, 5G, 6G, satellites, IoT communication protocols) and signal propagation in wireless environments
  • Basic knowledge of the TCP/IP model and its network and transport layer protocols
  • Prior knowledge of network simulations in general, and especially on the ns-3 network simulator, is appreciated but not mandatory since you will be tutored for these
  • Programming skills in C++ are mandatory to be able to develop simulation models in the ns-3 simulator 
  • Experience in other programming languages such as Python and Java is appreciated
  • Experience in software development in a Linux environment is appreciated
  • Mandatory spoken and written fluency in English; Finnish working proficiency is considered beneficial
  • Motivation for a research career.
