VTT Summer of Changemakers: Research Trainee or Master's Thesis worker for network simulations

Do you want to start changing the world for the better next summer? Are you all about science and technology? Would you like to develop your skills and use them to tackle the greatest challenges of our time? VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2023 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2100 brilliant minds from 50 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

Do you want to be our next Research Trainee or Thesis worker in our 6G research team? Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!

We are looking for a motivated research trainee or a master’s thesis worker to research future wireless network technologies and systems. Especially, the work will concentrate on simulations of such technologies and systems. In practice, this means developing simulation models for such technologies and systems, running simulation campaigns, and analyzing the results. We are using the ns-3 network simulator (https://www.nsnam.org/), but also other simulators are used if needed. The work will be done in collaboration with a senior expert and other project team members at VTT.

Our team focuses on the development of satellite and terrestrial communications solutions for demanding application areas such as autonomous and remote-controlled systems, and industrial users. We develop also situational awareness solutions to enable autonomous operations and to optimize the use of spectrum for future communication systems. Simulation studies are an important part of the development of such new demanding solutions. The team is located in Oulu and Espoo, the open position is in Oulu premises.

What would your responsibilities include?

  • State-of-the-art literature review on the topic to be studied
  • Familiarization with the simulation tools to be used
  • Development of new simulation models or enhancing existing models with new features
  • Running simulations and analyzing the results
  • Writing user manual for the developed simulation model/features
  • Reporting on simulation result analysis in a form of a research report, conference paper, or master thesis.

The content of the work will be tailored according to your skills and practical experience, as well as the current status of the ongoing projects. We are providing interesting and challenging work in a dynamic research team. This opens excellent possibilities for you to participate both in national and international R&D projects.

A specific project to work on: We have an ongoing project to develop a network simulator for an upcoming multi-layered satellite constellation network. Alternatively, further development of the DECT-2020 NR model could be possible.

What we expect you to have:

  • Basic knowledge of wireless technologies (e.g., WiFi, LTE, 5G, 6G, satellites, IoT communication protocols) and signal propagation in wireless environments
  • Basic knowledge of the TCP/IP model and its network and transport layer protocols
  • Prior knowledge of network simulations in general, and especially on the ns-3 network simulator, is appreciated but not mandatory since you will be tutored for these
  • Programming skills in C++ are mandatory to be able to develop simulation models in the ns-3 simulator
  • Experience in other programming languages such as Python and Java is appreciated
  • Experience in software development in a Linux environment is appreciated
  • Mandatory spoken and written fluency in English; Finnish working proficiency is considered beneficial
  • Motivation for a research career.

As a person, we hope that you are:

  • Able to work independently, but at the same time you are an innovative and solutions-oriented team-player
  • Willing to learn new things
  • Skillful in problem-solving
  • Proactive with a self-driven mindset.

The ideal VTT Changemaker is a curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start. You are also a team player with strong collaboration skills who wants to drive positive impact in the world.

What would we offer you?

  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth.
