Do you want to be our next Research Trainee in our Maritime Research team?
As a Research Trainee at the Maritime Research team, you will participate in maritime related projects, developing methods for hydrodynamic, hydro-acoustic and structural problems. In this position, you will have an essential role in assessing maritime transportation energy requirements.
Our team, Maritime Research team works on topical issues of decarbonization and digitalization of maritime transportation. The goal is to improve energy efficiency and safety of seaborne transportation. In this way enabling the industry to reach the goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) GHG Strategy and the EU Commission’s European Green Deal.
The team consists of experts in, ship hydrodynamics computational modelling, energy system modelling and optimization, structural vibration and underwater acoustics modelling, and ship navigation modelling and environmental impacts from shipping.
What would your responsibilities include?
- As a research trainee you would be participating in some of the current research topics in our team, including ship energy efficiency, ship propulsion hydrodynamics, wind assisted propulsion, vibrations of ship structures and underwater radiated noise.
- Conduct comprehensive research and develop both analytical and simulation techniques to address hydro-vibro-acoustic challenges. Assess the effectiveness, accuracy, and computational efficiency of these methods in various maritime-related applications.
- Work includes simulation and analysis work but can also include laboratory measurements and field measurements as well as measurement equipment development.
Who we are looking for?
- You are studying Maritime Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or Electrical Engineering
- You are familiar with FE modelling or CFD modelling.
- Programming skills in e.g. Python, Matlab, Visual Studio, C++ etc. are an advantage.
- Interest in developing measurement technologies related to structural and hydrodynamic problems.
As a person, we hope that you:

- Have good communication skills in written and spoken English.

All VTT Summer of Changemakers traineeships are paid, and the salary is determined based on study credits: for Master's students the monthly salary is between 2600€ and 2800€, and for Bachelor's students the monthly salary is between 2100€ and 2400€. The typical duration of traineeships is between 3 and 6 months, with start dates usually falling between March and June, however the length and the exact starting date can be discussed with the hiring team.
