Do you want to be our next Summer Trainee worker in our Materials for Emerging Technologies team? 

As a research trainee, your key goal is to participate in a research project concentrating on developing Imaging-MAP, our high-speed automated image analysis framework for different materials. In this position, you will have an essential role in analysing SEM pictures and labelling them. Labelled images will then be used for training of a Machine Learning (ML) model to automate image analysis. You will be guided and supported by the VTT material scientists and ML experts.

Our team, Materials for Emerging Technologies focuses on developing new materials for emerging technologies, such as hydrogen production, storage and transport, and to understand and evaluate material aging and damage in different operational environments.

What would your responsibilities include?

• You’ll be analysing SEM pictures and labelling material characteristics like voids, precipitates, and porosity.
• You’ll be developing the methodology for harvesting experimental data for ML methods and learning to use ML tools together with our ML specialists.
• You’ll be contributing to a fully automated materials design and development approach and establishing the state of the art.
• You’ll be reporting the work in English.

Who we are looking for?

• You study in a university degree programme in material science or physics.
• You have a solid understanding of material microstructural properties
• We wish that you are confident writing and speaking in English. Knowledge of Finnish is advantageous but not essential.

All VTT Summer of Changemakers traineeships are paid, and the salary is determined based on study credits: for Master's students the monthly salary is between 2600€ and 2800€, and for Bachelor's students the monthly salary is between 2100€ and 2400€. The typical duration of traineeships is between 3 and 6 months, with start dates usually falling between March and June, however the length and the exact starting date can be discussed with the hiring team.
