University Teacher in English and German language

The Department of Language and Communication Studies is currently seeking to recruit a University Teacher in English and German language and culture until further notice starting August 3rd 2026. The position is allocated to disciplines of English and German language and culture.

In the teaching offered by the Department of Language and Communication Studies, language is understood broadly as a social and dynamic phenomenon. In the English programme, the position emphasizes academic literacy and writing, grammar, and written and oral communication. In the German Language and Culture programme, the position emphasizes language-awareness teaching, particularly in the areas of grammar and syntax. 

 

Who we are looking for

The University Teacher participates in the teaching of English and German. Teaching focuses on linguistic expertise, particularly in the areas of grammar, syntax, and academic language skills, as well as the application of theoretical concepts and terminology to linguistic analysis, communication, and text production. The position requires experience in university-level language teaching, expertise in linguistics, and readiness to supervise bachelor’s theses. In the German Language and Culture programme the language of instruction in basic studies is Finnish and in advanced studies predominantly German, and the ability to compare the structures of German and Finnish is considered an asset.

The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the University Teacher are stipulated  by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. In this university teacher position, excellent proficiency in English and German is required, since the primary teaching languages are German and English. In addition, the task requires solid command of Finnish language (minimum B2 level).

In addition, the following skills and achievements are regarded as merits: (i) experience in teaching language studies at the university level, (ii) pedagogical training, (iii) development of teaching materials, (iv) other merits in teaching and supervision, and (v) strong communication and interaction skills. Research (vi) in the core research areas of the department or at their crossroads is also considered a merit.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. The salary for a University Teacher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 5 for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 3700-4300 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. If you are relocating from abroad, we will support your move to Jyväskylä and Finland.
