Assistant / Associate Professor (tenure track) or Professor in Classics

The University of Turku, Faculty of Humanities, invites applications for the position of Assistant / Associate Professor (tenure track) or Professor in Classics. The employment will begin 1.8.2027.

The position is located at the School of Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Turku, within the Department of Classics

An Assistant / Associate Professor or Professor is expected to conduct and supervise scientific work, provide research-based teaching, follow developments in their field, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation.

The Assistant / Associate Professor or Professor of Classics:

is responsible for the Department of Classics and its staff, BA, MA and post-graduate studies, and the department’s societal interaction,

  • teaches and supervises a wide range of topics in the MA level and in the doctoral programme,
  • actively participates in launching research projects and developing research collaboration, as well as conducts research in the field,
  • pursues professional development in accordance with a career plan drawn up at the beginning of the employment (in the case of an assistant / associate professor).

We require:

According to the regulations of the University of Turku (Section 29), applicants are required to have:

  • a suitable doctoral degree,
  • the ability to conduct independent scientific research and experience in leading scientific work,
  • experience in international collaboration,
  • the ability to provide high-quality, research-based teaching,
  • the ability to supervise theses.

In addition, we require:

  • excellent proficiency in Classical Greek and Latin, along with research merit in both languages
  • broad expertise in ancient languages and cultures
  • a research profile with a focus on linguistics
  • the ability to serve in a supervisory role or a willingness to participate in supervisory training.

When assessing an applicant's merits, the following will be considered: 

  • research merits,
  • teaching and supervision experience,
  • views on the development of the field at the University of Turku,
  • activity in acquiring external research funding,
  • experience serving as a supervisor.

Language skills

Successful performance in the position requires good proficiency in Finnish, because education is provided in Finnish, the language of teaching is Finnish and eksames and thesis are written in Finnish.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for other personnel / teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is 7 (Assistant/Associate Professor) or 8 -10 (Professor).  In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid. The exact salary is determined when the employment contract is drawn up. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 5500-5800 €/month (associate professors) and 6 200 – 7 000 €/month (professors).

The position has a trial period of six months.
