Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Good science, good life! The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a research and education unit representing two disciplines. It ranks among the international leaders in its field and performs strongly in global comparisons. In the 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, for example, it ranked first among Finnish universities in mathematics. The principal research areas in mathematics are mathematical analysis and geometry, including, among others, stochastics and the mathematics of inverse problems. Research groups in mathematical analysis and geometry study geometric analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations, as well as the geometry of metric groups. Research in stochastics focuses on stochastic analysis. The inverse problems research group studies inverse problems involving partial differential equations and geometry, with applications in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics, the research areas include computational statistics, causal models, study design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry and environmental statistics. The department hosts a research group belonging to the Research Council of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures (2022–2029), and is also a partner in the Flagship on Mathematical Modelling, Observation and Imaging (FAME). Student feedback indicates the department provides high-quality teaching. It also offers a wide range of courses to other JYU departments. Our international community of approximately 100 staff members and 350 students closely integrates research and teaching and forms an open, interactive working environment in which expertise is valued.
