Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), Environmental Law
We are looking for a professor or assistant professor (tenure track) in environmental law for the Faculty of Law at the University of Lapland. The tenure track career path consists of three levels with different criteria. The position is open to all three tenure track levels, with level 2 being the primary focus.
- Level 1: Assistant professor (fixed-term)
- Level 2: Associate professor (fixed-term)
- Level 3: Full professor (permanent)
Your duties
Duties of a professor/associate professor
According to Section 33(1) of the Universities Act (558/2009), a professor must conduct and supervise scientific research, provide teaching based on this research, follow developments in science, and participate in social interaction and international cooperation in their field.
The duties of a professor/associate professor of environmental law include research related to environmental law and the development of teaching and learning. The research related to the position includes conducting high-level scientific research in Finland and internationally, as well as actively seeking external research funding and project activities. The professor/associate professor of environmental law is responsible for teaching environmental law courses included in the degree programs for the Master of Laws and Master of Science in Law. In addition, the professor/associate professor's duties include teaching in the field, supervising theses and dissertations, and leading and developing research in Finnish and international cooperation networks.

Eligibility requirements
According to Section 28 of the University Regulations, a person appointed to a position at the University must have the education, experience, and language skills required for the successful performance of the duties of the position. These requirements are specified for each position before the position is filled.
According to Section 29 of the Rules of Procedure, candidates for a professorship filled on scientific grounds must have a doctoral degree, high-level scientific qualifications, experience in leading scientific research, the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and to supervise theses, as well as evidence of international cooperation in their field. When evaluating an applicant's merits, consideration is given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other merits achieved in teaching, a teaching demonstration if necessary, and supervised doctoral dissertations. In addition, success in obtaining supplementary research funding, experience in social interaction, active participation in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field of work, if necessary, as well as scientific work abroad and international assignments will be taken into account.
Language skills
The position requires proficiency in Finnish or moderate proficiency in Finnish and a strong motivation to learn Finnish.
As for a foreign applicant or a Finnish citizen who is not a native speaker, reasonable proficiency in Finnish may be required within two years.

Duration of employment: The position of professor will be filled for an indefinite period in accordance with the agreement. The position of assistant professor will be filled for a fixed term of five (5) years. The fixed term of the assistant professor position is based on the tenure track system.
Probationary period: 6 months
Salary: The salary for the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for teaching and research staff at universities. The salary consists of a task-specific salary component and a personal performance-based salary component. For professors, the task-specific salary component is in the requirement level classification at levels 8-11 (€5,354.16 - €7,889.68/month). For associate professors, it is level 7 (€4,428.24/month) and for assistant professors, it is levels 5-6 (€3,293.89 - €3,841.13/month). In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid, which is a maximum of 50% of the task-specific salary component.
