Postdoctoral Researcher in STN-RESLIDE-project

Turku School of Economics opens a position of Postdoctoral Researcher for fixed-term 1.9.2025-30.11.2027 in RESLIDE-project.

The post of postdoctoral researcher is positioned at the Department of Economics.  The Department of Economics conducts high-quality research in economics and belongs to the leading Finnish educators of economics at all degree levels. In the Turku School of Economics, the department is responsible for the research profile area Economic Policy and Markets.

The position is in professor Janne Tukiainen’s research group that focuses on political economics and is funded by the RESLIDE-project of the Strategic Research Council of the Finnish Research Council and Tukiainen’s ERC consolidator grant (INTRAPOL project).

The RESLIDE consortium consists of University of Helsinki, University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Finnish Institute of International Affairs and University of Eastern Finland. The RESLIDE consortium sets out to evaluate the resilience of liberal democracy in Finland and present remedies for how it can be safeguarded. The consortium's primary objectives are to identify the key risks and indicators of liberal democratic regression, assess their potential implications, and develop measures to prevent such developments.

The role of University of Turku in the project is to examine inequalities in political participation and representation, along with their impact on norms, economic policies and responses, and democratic backsliding. The research concerns for example spatial inequalities in participation and representation, the selection of public officials, public officials’ competence, and interventions targeting low-turnout groups. The research will primarily utilize extensive register data encompassing election data and individual level administrative, psychological and turnout related factors.

The job starts 1.9.2025 or by agreement.

Job description

Task include participating in all research activities related to the project as part of the research team. This includes responsibilities for theoretical modelling, research design, constructing data, econometric analysis and writing. In addition we expect a small amount of teaching, service and administrative duties.

Essential equirements 

Person selected for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher shall have an appropriate doctoral degree (Economics or (quantitative) political science) completed by the end of application deadline. We require proven track record of independent high-quality scientific research related to econometrics, quasi-experimental work and/or substantive political economy/science knowledge. Successful applicants have strong research orientation and fluency in English.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The starting salary for a postdoctoral researcher is approximately € 3600–4200 per month, depending on previous experience and expertise.

The position has a trial period of six months.
