Doctoral researcher in materials engineering

The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university that offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

We are currently looking for one doctoral researcher in the field of materials engineering. The position is fixed-term and the starting time for this position would be 12.1.2026, and the contract duration will be until the end of the project 30.4.2027.

This project develops biomimetic electrodes for bioelectrochemical systems to enhance wastewater treatment. The focus is on developing biomimetic structures decorated with nanomaterials that will capture micro/nanoplastics and aromatic compounds. The research aims to optimize biomimetic designs, nanomaterial interface, and electrode performance, offering scalable, eco-friendly water purification solutions.

The project is done in collaboration with the Materials for Flexible devices and Materials in Health Technology groups.

Job description

The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field, and have proven experience in functional nanomaterials synthesis, biomimetic and functional surfaces, device engineering, and inorganic chemistry. Strong merits include hands-on experience with biomimetic electrodes, hydrophobic surfaces and carbon-based nanomaterials such as MXenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene, as well as their use in functional devices.

A person selected for the post of doctoral researcher is required to have a right to pursue a doctoral degree in the University of Turku. In addition, when acquiring their degree or otherwise, they are required to have demonstrated the ability to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will at the beginning of the employment be approximately 2500 €/month. A trial period of six (6) months is applied.
